It has now been almost two years since I was charged with opening BetterCloud’s first international office and almost 18 months since my family and I (and poor old Maxi 🐕 RIP) moved to CDMX. It truly has been a 🎢 with way more ups and downs (and, therefore, way more drama and fun) that I could have ever imagined. It has also been one of my most rewarding professional and personal experiences from which I have learned a ton (thank you David Politis Jesse Levin and Brian Loring for the opportunity!). I have chatted about my experience opening an office abroad in a couple of podcasts and I have also informally advised a number of companies thinking about doing the same in MX (CDMX is a 🔥 place for tech right now as Georges Janin recently wrote about). I also want to make sure I write down what I learned so me or others can use it in the future. So I decided to write a series of posts about this topic. I’m going to divide them into the following themes: 1) Where should I open the office?; 2) Should I incorporate an entity or use a partner?; 3) What are the administrative/logistical kinks to keep in mind?; 4) Remote, hybrid or in office?; 5) Who should be my first hires?; 6) How do I quickly scale the team?; 7) What are the growing pains?
