According to the video, Neil Gershenfeld, the director of MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms, discusses his work on self-replicating robots and the future of fabrication. Gershenfeld argues that traditional computers, which separate computation from the physical world, are fundamentally flawed. He believes that future computing will be embodied, meaning that the hardware and software will be inseparable. This is similar to how biological systems work, where the form and function of an organism are determined by its genes. Gershenfeld's lab is working on developing robots that can self-replicate and self-assemble. These robots could be used to manufacture products on demand, or to build structures in remote locations. Gershenfeld believes that this technology has the potential to revolutionize manufacturing and construction. The video also discusses the implications of Gershenfeld's work for sustainability. By enabling us to manufacture products locally, self-replicating robots could help to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, they could be used to create products that are designed to be easily recycled or reused. The video talks about the parallels between nature and robotics, sustainability and our balance with humans, our progress and our harmonizing with nature beings on this earth and with the earth itself. Nature has an entire ecosystem, where the demise of one plant material becomes the food for the next phase and the moisture trapped is recycled. This seems to be parallel to the idea of this robotics world where we train robotics to create deconstruct and re-create from the same source material. Sustainability is all about making thoughtful changes to the environment. Artificial intelligence seems to be a move towards efficiencies, and now we're trying to mimic the brain, and he is trying to mimic the ecosystem into sustainability.
