UK Music unveils new research into the value of gigs, concerts and festivals to local economies, with Beyonce and Blur attracting 19.2 million music tourists to UK events. Music tourism is a growing part of the music industry. London saw a 40% rise in music tourists from 4.9 million in 2022, to 6.9 million in 2023. This growth is not just limited to London, with an 86% increase in music tourists to the South West, rising from 1 million in 2022, to 2 million in 2023. There was also a 29% increase of music tourists in the North East, from 352,000 in 2022 to 489,000 in 2023. However, despite the growth in music tourism, independent festivals and grassroots music venues are still struggling and artists are also facing a cost-of-touring crisis. In September 2023, UK Music published its Manifesto for Music, which outlined measures that could be taken to supercharge music industry growth and support the talent pipeline and is now calling on the new Government to take action. I wrote a policy assessment in 2022 on the threats faced by the venue landscape. In my policy analysis, I focused on the significant challenges that were facing the United Kingdom's grassroots music venues, which were crucial to the cultural fabric and economic vitality of the UK. These venues had been severely impacted by various external factors, including urban redevelopment, stringent licensing regulations, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Brexit. I observed a troubling trend where many live performance venues were closing due to rising operational costs, restrictive licensing laws, and a lack of sufficient government support. Through my analysis, I highlighted the need for government intervention to acknowledge the cultural and social value of these venues. I strongly advocated for adjustments to business rates and the implementation of legal protections under the "Agent of Change" principle. Additionally, I drew comparisons with Berlin's successful approach to protecting cultural venues, suggesting that similar legislative measures should be adopted in the UK to safeguard these critical cultural spaces. Overall, my analysis back in 2022 underscored the urgency of revising current policies to prevent further deterioration of the UK's music venue network and to support the cultural regeneration of urban areas, that very threat still looms over the industry this day. It is vital to protect the grass roots venues, as well as to battle against the rising costs of touring, because at the end of the day - the future and health of the industry depends on that very lifeline that keeps generating the world renowned talent, as we know today.

UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl on the value #music brings to our towns and cities, as UK Music release valuable #musictourism data. Music tourism spending is made up of £4.2 billion spent directly by music tourists attending concerts and festivals in the UK, including the cost of a ticket, on-site spend, travel, accommodation, and meals while travelling to events. A further £3.8 billion was spent indirectly through the value chain, including costs such as fencing and security or a restaurant paying for ingredients. But while music generates huge benefits for our local areas, beyond a handful of very successful musicians the opportunities for many artists are becoming increasingly squeezed and grassroots music venues and festivals, studios and rehearsal spaces are facing tough economic pressures. Last year UK Music’ released the Here, There and Everywhere report that featured a toolkit to local governments to help them maximize the opportunities music can bring to their economies. A Live Music Pass for under 25’s? There is increasing evidence that the connection to live music experience for under 25 is being impacted by cost of living impacts, changing drinking habits and other issues. The live music industry has a demand issue So, I’m thinking of demand stimulus - why not take a serious look at a ‘Live Music Pass” for next summer? $200 vouchers to be spent at live music events and venues. Particular focus on U 25s. Europe has a number of hugely successful versions of a “culture pass” and we have similar programs for young people and sport and post Covid stimuli #musicaustralia #festivals #venues #livemusic #australianmusic Music Australia APRA AMCOS Mitch Wilson Australian Live Music Business Council Australian Festival Association. The ACA/CKrowd/PMAN Rhythms of Africa Project We are partnering with Artsconnect Africa and Performing Arts Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN to launch) a social impact project known as Rhythms of Africa. Rhythms of Africa is structured around two core pillars: exposure and empowerment for music industry professionals in traditional music genres. The project is starting in Nigeria, and it is the first step of a wider ACA and CKrowd initiative that will put the spotlight on traditional music genres across the continent. We believe that this project will take us further in achieving our goal of making social and economic impact within the African music space. Exposure: The project will deep dive into different traditional music genres, interact with stakeholders within the space, identify the issues and the opportunities and use our digital assets to create including recordings, interviews, and documentaries, to reach global audiences and raise awareness about the opportunities available within the Nigerian traditional African music space. Empowerment We hope that through our efforts in highlighting the issues and leveraging our networks will help link the professionals in the Nigerian local music space up with global opportunities that can help them earn from their skills and experience and further help create a value chain around the traditional music industry that will ensure that the creators of the culture behind these sounds can benefit from it. Impact and Future Aspirations of the “Rhythms of Africa” Project The impact of our project extends beyond individual musicians; it contributes to the broader cultural and economic landscape. By professionalizing traditional African music, we aim to create sustainable career paths for music professionals in these genres, foster cultural pride, and ensure the continuity of these musical traditions for future generations. Looking ahead, we aspire to expand our reach across more African countries, build partnerships with cultural institutions, and explore innovative ways to integrate traditional music into mainstream media and education systems. We believe that by investing in the next generation of traditional African music professionals, we are not only preserving a precious cultural heritage but also enriching the global music tapestry. Join Us in Our Journey We invite you to join us in this transformative journey. Whether you are a creative, technical or business professional in the music industry, a cultural enthusiast, or someone who believes in the power of music to drive social change, there are many ways to get involved. Together, we can amplify the voices of traditional African music, celebrate its diversity, and ensure its vibrant future. #TraditionalMusic #AfricanMusic #RhythmsofAfrica

A lot of people still don't realise the true value of live events. That's OK, because UK Music Ltd's latest report gave us an insight into its impact in 2023... 🎪 19.2 million music fans travelled from across the UK and overseas to see UK shows and festivals (33% increase on the year prior) 🎪 £8 billion spent in local economies as a result of music tourism (21% increase on the year prior) 🎪 62,000 jobs sustained through music tourism (17% increase on the year prior) 🎪 1.014 million foreign music tourists (a slight drop from 1.053 million in the year prior) 🎪 18.2 million domestic music tourists (36% increase on the year prior) And that's just the economic benefits of our industry - think about the benefits to people, places, societies and communities. Despite positive impacts, UK Music CEO Tom Kiehl states: “Grassroots music venues and festivals, studios and rehearsal spaces are facing tough economic pressures and it’s vital that the music ecosystem that enables musicians and artists to perform is supported to ensure that everyone – no matter where they live – can have access to music. “We’re looking forward to working with the new Government to ensure that all our towns and cities have thriving music ecosystems that support the growth of the industry – generating thousands more jobs, boosting economic growth and making their areas even more attractive to visitors.” #grassroots #festivals #events #musicindustry #yourfestivalneedsyou 📸 BLOND:ISH at Labryinth Open Air, Tofte Manor - captured by Jake Philip Davis, produced by The Fair
