I cannot think of a better time for the Peruvian Government to release the Supreme Decree that approves the provisions required for the full implementation of the #RENAMI and with that, the operability of the Peruvian carbon registry. Absolute milestone for #Peru and its climate action plan. That said, while the Supreme Decree shows a clear interest and strong commitment of the Peruvian government to actively participate in the cooperative mechanisms of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which is very much needed in this political context, there are still some critical aspects that will need to be addressed, particularly in light of the current negotiations in #COP29, to ensure consistency.

In 1992, countries agreed on an international treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), as a framework for international cooperation to combat climate change by limiting average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change and coping with its impacts. There are 198 countries that have ratified the Convention, called Parties to the Convention, and every year, they hold a Conference of the Parties (COP). This course introduces the international climate change regime, its three key instruments (The UNFCCC, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement), and the institutional arrangements for the climate change intergovernmental process. This course focuses on UNFCCC rules of procedure regarding the negotiation process as well as the mechanism for convening the Parties through various forums and working groups, including the presidency and bureau, observers and elections, and the decision-making and reporting processes. https://unccelearn.org/

With #COP29 underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, we have produced a briefing paper on climate change and human rights in Northern Ireland. Our paper recommends that: - All climate actions taken by government departments should be informed by international human rights standards and norms. - Any legislative or policy decisions in relation to climate change and environmental regulation should consider the interplay of the European Convention on Human Rights, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and Windsor Framework Article 2. - Climate justice values should be adopted in all laws and policies aimed at tackling climate change, including focusing on the specific needs of and preventative measures for those most affected, including children. - Steps should be taken to monitor and address poor air quality in NI. - The establishment of a Just Transition Commission with oversight functions to monitor implementation of the just transition principle under the Climate Change Act (NI) 2022.
