Meet Pamela Murkin! 👋🏾 🌱Q: What is your go-to eco recipe? 🌱A: Tofu Sandwiches! They are so quick, easy and delicious! Kids love them and they are great for school lunches too! Add spices to extra firm tofu squares (nooch, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, salt) and fry. Put on toasted English muffins, and add toppings as desired (tomatoes, lettuce, plant-powered cheese etc). Yumm!! 🥪 🌱Q: How often do you make it? 🌱A: Weekly! 😋 🌱Q: What is your favourite planet-saving tip? 🌍 🌱A: Consider your impact on the planet in everyday decisions. By making this the norm, and explaining to my kids why we try to choose the more inconvenient route because it's better for the planet, helps to keep the whole family committed. 🌱Q: Tell us more about yourself! 🤩 🌱A: My passion for the environment began while I was doing my undergrad at the University of Manitoba in Environmental Science. I've been fortunate to have a wonderful career up to now in non-profits, fundraising and supporting our communities, however I've always been missing a real connection to the planet. The Kroger Co Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation is Kroger's nonprofit public charity that supports other nonprofit organizations, social entrepreneurs and creative thinkers who are focused on improving food security, ending food waste and more. The foundation looks for mission-aligned organizations interested in advancing greater positive impacts together – because we know we can’t do it alone. This past summer, I had the opportunity to follow three grant recipients and highlight the great work they’re doing in our communities: WasteLess Solutions (Salt Lake City, UT), LifeCare Alliance (Columbus, OH), and YMCA of Virginia's Blue Ridge (Roanoke, VA). We’re proud of the work they’re doing to not only help our neighbors, but invest in families and future generations. Instead of buying polluting firecrackers, consider these alternatives: 🇺🇸 Donate to Food Banks: Buy a bag of food for your local food bank or shelter. This not only helps those in need but also fosters a sense of community. 🇺🇸 Eco-Friendly Decorations:  Use reusable or biodegradable decorations for your celebration. This reduces waste and is better for the environment. 🇺🇸 Community Clean-Up:  Organize or participate in a community clean-up event. It’s a great way to give back and ensure that public spaces remain clean and enjoyable for everyone. 🇺🇸 Plant a Tree: Planting trees is a wonderful way to contribute to the environment. It’s a long-lasting tribute to Independence Day that benefits future generations. 🇺🇸 Buy food for animal shelters: Even a small bag of food goes a long way in helping our furry pals. 🇺🇸 Light Sparklers:  If you still want some traditional fun, opt for sparklers. They are less polluting than large fireworks and can be enjoyed safely. This week At Rotary: We welcome Alice Morrison, the Co-Executive Director of Policy and Development for Friends of Family Farmers (FoFF). Friends of Family Farmers was conceived to promote and protect socially responsible agriculture in Oregon. This non-profit organization was founded in the summer of 2005 and has been advocating for small to mid-sized farms ever since. Alice's topic this Tuesday will be: The case for small farms and the impact of your community food system. When it comes to food, why should we buy local? There is a lot of information floating around about the benefits of small farms, local food systems, and organic practices. But what does it all mean, what really makes a difference, and how do you know something is the real deal? Get the answers to these questions and learn about vital programs to help small growers from Friends of Family Farmers. Lessons from the ocean: Part 1 Fun fact. Did you know that Hermit Crabs walk around in their shells going about their business, growing their little hermit crab selves until they are feeling the pinch of their current abode, and have to wait for more of their hermit crab mates, who then line up in size order and swap shells down to the crab that needs a bigger shell (I don't know what happens to the big crab at the end...maybe they find a coconut?). What's this got to do with leadership though? Sometimes it's easy to coast along where everything is OK - you know what the go is, you are well and truly in your comfort zone. However, there may come a time when you feel pinched and like things aren't fitting as well as they used to and you start thinking that it maybe time for a new shell. The knowing we need to change will come long before being ready to take action toward change. Sometimes you need to figure out what kind of change you want to make and then form a plan for how you want to get there. If you're ready to start thinking about finding a new shell, whether that's in your job, or life, you don't have to wait for another 'crab' to donate you it's former home. And you don't have to keep being pinched and squeezed by a role, or life that doesn't fit you any more. If that's sparked a little something in you, I'd love to help. I'm very good at being in that 'in-between' space and one thing I know for sure, it can be lonely but it doesn't have to be. #leadershipdevelopment #newshells #theinbetween
