#MomentInFocus: 'First Breath: Newborn at Meliaputti PHC' (Photo: Abhishek Reddy) Nearly 40 per cent of newborn deaths and half of maternal deaths happen on the day a child is born (Unicef). Maternal delivery without skilled care at birth is a serious public health concern. Strong public healthcare facilities and availability of skilled birth attendants will improve public confidence in institutional deliveries. A major focus area of our Primary Health Centre upgradation works is maternal and newborn care at facility level. The project, in collaboration with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, ensures: a. Availability of essential labour room equipment and consumables as per IPHS Standards-2022 b. Organisation of labour rooms as per NQAS and laQshya standards c. Availability of Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA) during childbirth d. Training of staff of labour room organization, management, use of SOPs and protocols including emergency obstetric care and essential new-born care We upgraded 11 PHCs in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh and we aim to extend the coverage to 2 million rural population using a district-wide coverage approach. #health #healthcare #primarycare #children #impact #Sustainability #SDGs #PhotoOfTheDay #drreddysfoundation

The birth of a newborn is generally a smooth and uncomplicated experience for the labor and delivery staff. However, being prepared for any unexpected complication is necessary. Nearly 10% of newborns will require some level of assistance after birth, such as clearing of the airway or support with breathing and circulation. Even if your team members feel ready for the most complex birth, in this #ClinicalView article there are a few ways your staff can always be prepared for all deliveries.

The infant mortality rate in India was 42.9% in 2011 and significantly reduced to 25.5% in 2021. Being aware of the high infant mortality rate, the Government of India launched the India Newborn Action Plan in 2014, to ensure that stillbirths and neonatal mortality rates are reduced to ‘single digit’ by 2030 and LaQshya, also introduced in the same year, provides quality healthcare for the labor ward and maternity operation theater at government hospitals. Other governmental initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Janani Suraksha Yojana, and Mission Indradhanush, were also introduced to cater to rural women and their newborns. Working in alignment with the government, #InfosysFoundation has always introduced initiatives to protect newborns and children, by providing technology driven solutions to improve maternal, neonatal, and child health outcomes, through Project Early Life. In addition, the Foundation built world class infrastructure with a 9300 sq.m. maternity block in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka. #InfosysCSR | #childcare | #maternalcare | #infantcare | #healthcare

Do you look within before looking around to understand the reason behind a persistent problem? For centuries, physicians failed to identify the reason for the fatalities post-childbirth due to puerperal infection. In the 1800s, a physician named – Ignaz Semmelweis noticed that more women were dying at the doctor’s clinic than at the midwives’ clinic. Why is that? The answer was – the doctors were doing autopsies and the midwives weren’t! This implies that doctors carried the cadaverous particles while delivering babies that led to the deaths. Dr. Ignaz then stressed the need for doctors to wash hands before assisting in childbirth. The number of fatalities drastically plummeted and to this day, the concept of hand washing holds. The pandemic has only reinstated the significance of this discovery. So, whenever you are challenged by the same issue repeatedly, first look within – the problem could be YOU. We are fortunate to have doctors who have sacrificed so much, especially during this pandemic to save myriads of lives across the globe. In fact, if it wasn’t for a doctor, we wouldn’t have known or understood the concept of washing hands not just to wash off visible dirt but also invisible organisms to stay safe from deadly infections like the one we are in the middle of. Blessed, my best Friend @Sapna Manocha Verma is a doctor, Chitti Shireen Venkat, SMILE 24*7 ready to help, going out of the way praying for her patients. “World prematurity day” Preterm baby are tiny babies and they need extra support and comfortable environment to grow well. Premature babies often have serious health problems, especially when they're born very early. These problems often vary. But the earlier a baby is born, the higher the risk of health challenges. If you give birth to a preterm baby, your baby will likely need to stay in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the hospital. Some infants need to spend time in a unit that cares for them and closely tracks their health day and night. NICU units are staffed with health care providers and a team that's trained to help preterm babies. Your baby may need extra help feeding and adapting right after delivery. Your health care team can help you understand what's needed and what your baby's care plan will be. Feel free to ask them questions. #prematurebaby #worldprematurityday #preterm #newborn #newborncare #nicu #nicunurse #neonatalcare #prematurityawarenessmonth #neonatologist Kailash Healthcare Ltd

On this Infant Protection Day, FMCH is committed to safeguarding the lives of low birth weight and preterm infants through our Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) initiative. Globally, 19.8 million newborns (14.7%) suffer from low birth weight, with India accounting for 17.29%. Preterm births also remain a concern, with 13.4 million cases worldwide, and India contributing to over 20%. These vulnerable babies face increased risks of mortality, stunted growth, and long-term health complications. Our KMC program, in collaboration with Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) addresses this critical need by providing vital skin-to-skin care and exclusive breastfeeding guidance. Let's take the example of Sakshi’s baby, who was born at 860g, experienced remarkable progress under KMC, gaining upto 1800g in just over a month. Through continuous care, we aim to improve neonatal outcomes and give every child the chance to thrive. Together, we’re creating healthier beginnings. #InfantProtection #KMC #NewbornCare
