With a growing number of Ontarians purchasing electric vehicles and heat pumps, the IESO’s Grid Innovation Fund (GIF) is releasing a call for proposals to leverage these technologies to contribute to grid flexibility, reliability, affordability and sustainability. This year’s call will provide up to $9.5 million for proposals that will test new opportunities to demonstrate how aggregations of electric vehicles and weather-sensitive controllable loads, such as heat pumps with thermal storage, can be leveraged to provide grid services and demand side management at both the local and provincial levels. In collaboration with the IESO, the Ontario Energy Board will serve as a regulatory partner, where proponents can concurrently seek guidance from its Innovation Sandbox. The application window will open in May. More information about this year’s call for proposals can be found on the IESO’s website. https://lnkd.in/gkKZa2tB

To energy sector innovators: the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)'s 2024 Grid Innovation Fund (GIF) Proposal Guideline has been posted. This year, the GIF theme is Electrification and Demand Management with a focus on the transportation sector (electric vehicles) and heating/cooling sector. As a result of the energy transition, the electricity system is seeing an increase in demand and changes to electricity usage patterns. With these changes comes an opportunity to explore how the electrification of these two sectors can help support the grid. The IESO is seeking projects that will demonstrate how EVs and weather-sensitive controllable loads can provide system flexibility and be integrated to support the distribution network and bulk electricity system. We are pleased that the Ontario Energy Board’s Innovation Sandbox will play an important role as regulatory partner for this call, providing regulatory guidance to proponents. A Stakeholder Engagement session will be held on April 23, 2024, and proposals will be accepted between May 27 – July 21, 2024. We are looking forward to collaborating with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) on the latest call for proposals for its Grid Innovation Fund. The fund will invest $9.5 million to support projects that advance electrification and demand management as part of Ontario’s ongoing energy transformation. We will serve as a regulatory partner, where proponents can seek guidance from our Innovation Sandbox in support of their projects https://lnkd.in/gn8eaa6 This year the fund will focus on two streams: electric vehicles and space and water heating and cooling. Anticipating increased demand on Ontario’s electricity system from EVs and heat pumps, successful projects would enable these technologies to contribute to grid flexibility, reliability and affordability. The application window for the IESO’s Grid Innovation Fund will open in May. For more information, see: https://lnkd.in/eskWGfma

On June 3rd a retrofit forum will be hosted by Nisga’a Nation, on their Homeland, in partnership with Community Energy Association. Now, we coordinate dozens of training and capacity building events - in fact, over the past couple of years, we have had 700 participants engage in training which has spanned from mechanical system, house-as-a-system, envelope-first, and more. This Nisga’a event is unique. It is the manifestation of our intention to walk with, learn from, and co-create projects that support the priorities of Indigenous communities while building local capacity and fostering long-term resilience. I’m bursting with pride. 🍃Gaëtane, from our Relationships and Reconciliation team, has been spending impactful time in community over the past year and has already successfully secured funding to ensure Nisga’a staff have capacity to support a major retrofit project in development. 🍃Led by Capital Project manager Eric Nyce, we are proceeding with a 40 home deep energy retrofit pilot. 10 homes per Nisga’a community. Their ambition is to address 500 homes over the next few years. 🍃BC’s top trainers and energy retrofit experts are on board and the training is coming to community. They include: Nuxalk hereditary chief, and independent First Nations consultant, Richard Hall, thinkbright Homes owner and committed sustainability expert Meredith Hamstead, President of CHBA BC Mark Bernhardt, Rob Pope of Ecolighten Energy Solutions, James Bourget of RDH and high performance builder Shawn Wiebe. 🍃The case study of a multi-year retrofit initiative at Akisqnuk First Nation will be shared - a project that demonstrated the value of aggregated planning and implementation for deep energy retrofits (more to come on that!!) This project is built on trust and relationships. Not only between CEA and Nisga’a, but with the funders who recognize the value of two-way learning, community-led design and the importance of building local capacity for long-term impact. Thanks to Real Estate Foundation of BC, Canadian Home Builders' Association Northern BC, BC Hydro, FortisBC and the Province of BC.
Come out to the “Northwest Energy Retrofit Forum” to gain the latest on how high-quality retrofits can make buildings more durable, more comfortable, and use less energy! What’s not to like? Register for expert presentations and hands-on workshops in Terrace June 4 and 5, and to apply for a tour in Nisga’a Nation on June 3. Learn more and register at https://lnkd.in/gtsST5zu This event is enabled by Building A Legacy North, a collaboration of Canadian Home Builders' Association Northern BC and CEA. Thank you to our supporters Nisga'a Lisims Government, FortisBC, BC Hydro, Real Estate Foundation of BC, and the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.

With 43 days, November 16, 2024, marks the day Germany could begin relying on bioenergy for the rest of the year. Germany is the fifteenth EU Member State to celebrate its National Bioenergy Day on this year's listing of Bioenergy Europe's National Bioenergy Days. In my view, countries will adopt various forms of bioenergy to address their energy challenges. Those of us working in the energy product industry are well-prepared for the future.
