Can we explore and discover all there is in the Universe before we chuck out the data? 🌌 That’s the question that keeps radio astronomer Ivy Wong busy working in our Space and Astronomy team. Ivy explores the physical processes that drive the evolution of galaxies among other galactic questions. Space surveys collect huge amounts of data which traditional computers struggle to process. Ivy is using our Next Generation equipment to find alternative ways to analyse ever-growing survey sizes and to reveal more of the Universe’s secrets. I have joined the new project of European Space Agency - ESA, THESEUS space telescope mission. THESEUS is a multi-instrument mission to detect and characterize Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) up to cosmological distances, and monitor the transient X-ray Universe. It aspires to vastly increase the discovery space of the transient high energy phenomena over the entire cosmic history. I will be working in developing the space software for the satellite at the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space telescope designed to conduct infrared astronomy. Its high-resolution and high-sensitivity instruments allow it to view objects too old, distant, or faint for the Hubble Space Telescope. This enables investigations across many fields of astronomy and cosmology, such as observation of the first stars and the formation of the first galaxies, and detailed atmospheric characterization of potentially habitable exoplanets.

A cosmic question mark? Yes, you read that right! Astronomers were stunned when the James Webb Space Telescope captured a phenomenon called “hyperbolic umbilic gravitational lens”. It magnifies hidden star-forming regions, revealing details astronomers rarely get to see and shedding light on star formation in the universe’s early years! Thanks to Canadian contributions, including the Canadian NIRISS (Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) aboard Webb, a team from Saint Mary's University and data from the Canadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS), this rare sight was made possible. This discovery not only helps us understand how galaxies like our Milky Way evolved billions of years ago but also demonstrates the incredible capabilities of Webb and its Canadian contributions in exploring the cosmos.
