Results from our albedo study published in September 2021 are consistent with other scientific publications evaluating MODIS albedo products (*, **): 1️⃣ Accurate estimation of reflected irradiance is essential for solar energy applications. A relatively small difference in albedo value results in markable variations when estimating the bifacial gain of solar PV plants. 2️⃣ Although most of the simulators work with long-term average monthly values as inputs, additional data, such as daily time series, are required to characterize the variability of ground albedo and evaluate different scenarios. 3️⃣ Validation of available data sources using high-quality albedo ground measurements shows significant differences in their accuracy. Solargis shows the most accurate values for ground stations at 8 sites in the US – in different geographies and land cover types. 4️⃣ Differences in spatial resolutions, gaps in the data, and special evaluation of snow conditions are key factors explaining differences in albedo provided by different sources. Last week Marina Alves from our group presented the most recent results on our research efforts on micro-concentrator solar cells at the E-MRS Fall Meeting in Warsaw. We're thrilled to announce that our project coordinator, Dr. Stephan Krenek, leader of the "Photonic Thermometry" Working Group at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) recently had the opportunity to present our project at the 2nd Symposium KRITIS: Sensor and Monitoring Solutions for the Protection of Critical Infrastructures. The symposium, which took place at PTB facilities in Berlin-Charlottenburg on Thursday June 20th, provided an invaluable platform to introduce the innovative and emerging fibre-optic thermometry technology to a distinguished audience of experts in critical infrastructure security. It was an excellent opportunity to highlight the importance of developing the fibre-optic thermometry technology as an innovative solution for optimisation and monitoring of critical infrastructure. In his presentation, Dr Krenek underscored the intrinsic link between fibre-optic sensor technology and the ongoing energy transition. Due to distributed sensing and immunity to electromagnetic fields, these sensors can be used to improve measurement of temperature in extreme environments encountered by energy providers and industrial facilities. Fibre-optic sensors play a pivotal role in advancing temperature measurement precision, crucial for applications in thermal storage, geothermal energy, and throughout the entirety of power grid infrastructure and energy-intensive industrial processes. Fibre-optic thermometry will impact the development of a conductive and flexible power grid. Today's #WeekendRead recommendation is a highlight article from our #Photovoltaics division: "A precise method for the spectral adjustment of LED and multi-light source solar simulators" by David Chojniak, Michael Schachtner, Kasimir Reichmuth, Alexander Bett, Michael Rauer, Jochen Hohl-Ebinger, Alexandra Schmid, Gerald Siefer, Stefan Glunz Nowadays, LED-based solar simulators are increasingly used for measuring solar cells. The typically high number of spectrally different LEDs and the resulting mutual influence of individual light sources, however, increases the complexity of measuring tandem solar cells. This publication presents a new methodology for the precise spectral adjustment of LED-based solar simulators, including an optimization calculation and a calibration method for individual LED spectra.
