Yesterday we launched round #7!! of the Career Development program I lead at The Hebrew University. A wonderful collaboration between the International Office and the Career Center. We changed the name a bit this time around, decided to call it- “HUJI International Career Navigator” And why? Because, that’s precisely our aim - To help PhD students navigate their career! Taking into account their needs, passions, values, knowledge, skills, abilities, talents. Yes, it’s a long list, and so important for paving the path ahead. On our side, we make sure to provide the participants with a rich toolkit consisting of everything they need in order to move forward and succed, be it in Academia or in the Industry (which in itself requires navigation😉). In this cohort we have students from 14 different countries, and a wide range of remarkable study and research fields. The diversity and cross cultural essence of the program is, I believe, it’s “secret sauce”. I love embarking upon new fascinating journeys such as this and am lucky to also have a great team alongside me. מרכז הקריירה בעברית HUJI Jerusalem Career Center Michal Pinsky- Gross Leora Maccaba Jane Turner Keren Sagi

So how do you go from 18 years in academia and social research to hypnotherapy and coaching...? By chance and then following your new passion, is my answer! 🙃 😆 Just as I was pondering on re-introducing myself to my network... ...this blog that I'd written last year landed on my LI feed 🙃 If there are any fellow academics out there thinking of leaving academia (or other professionals wanting to leave corporate!), I'll just repeat my core message... DO IT IF ACADEMIA NO LONGER FEELS LIKE THE PLACE FOR YOU! Life really is too short to stay stuck in careers that no longer serve us. And even if you feel like there's nothing else you can do after X years of working in [fill in the gap]... You so can!!! Take it from me 💪 My other tips and encouragement for you are in the blog below, scroll to the end 🙃 👇 It's amazing how much our lives can change when we just give ourselves a chance to experiment... BTW, since writing this article in June last year, I have pivoted my coaching focus and now mainly support people with ADHD. (Because when you're in business you can pivot to whatever you want to be!) And the very first thing I start from when working with ADHD clients is emotional regulation and mindset - because if we know how to calm ourselves down and how to work with negative thoughts, everything becomes so much lighter and easier! 🌟 So if you're looking for ADHD support, DM me. I am currently taking on Access To Work clients as well. #careerchange #leavingacademia #ADHD
Pathfinder Career Narratives 3 from the archives. 📚📓 These blogs are written by doctorate holders who reflect on their journey from doctoral research towards the many fulfilling career pathways for researchers within and beyond academia. Dr Paulina Trevena has a PhD in Sociology from the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr Trevena wrote for us about her career path in language teaching, followed by several years in research, mostly in academia, and her current work in mindset coaching. "Before making a career change, work out what you want. What is important to you? What are your values? What do you expect from a job? What lifestyle would you like to have? Let your career change be a positive choice and not one made from fear or desperation. That is the quickest way to disappointment." https://lnkd.in/enVNzXjD #research #careers #academia #transitions

A quick word of advice: If a recruiter reaches out about a position that requires English proficiency, and you think, "I'm not the right fit because my English isn't perfect." Hold on just a sec! 🛑 Here's the deal: recruiters aren't looking for perfection, they're looking for potential. Even if your English isn't flawless, having a conversational level, sometimes is more than enough to get your foot in the door! Instead of being too hard on yourself, showcase your willingness to communicate and improve! Your determination can speak volumes about your character and work ethic. So, the next time you feel tempted to self-reject, remember: it's not about being flawless, it's about being willing to learn and grow. Let the recruiters be the judge of your fit for the role! 🕵️♂️

Academic knowledge is crucial, but it's not the only key to career success. 🔑 While strong academic skills can help land that first job out of school, it's social-emotional learning (SEL) competencies that truly determine long-term professional growth and advancement. Think about it - what abilities allow someone to: ✨ Collaborate effectively on teams ✨ Negotiate conflicts with coworkers ✨ Understand and meet client needs ✨ Persevere through tough projects ✨ Adapt to changes and take Initiative ✨ Lead and inspire others The answer? Strong SEL skills like: 🤝 Relationship Management ⚖️ Social Awareness 🙋🏾♀️Self-Awareness 💯 Self-Management 🔭 Responsible Decision-Making The workplace increasingly demands these human skills that can't be automated. Employers are actively seeking candidates with high emotional intelligence. So, academics lay the foundation, SEL cultivates resilience, social dexterity, and creativity to truly thrive in the modern career landscape. Let's ensure our kids develop the whole skillset for lifelong success - academic AND social-emotional mastery. It's how they'll flourish!

𝗨𝗦 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝟭𝟱 I’m sure you are familiar with the phrase: Who you know is more important than what you know. While it is important to be grounded in your discipline, it is also critical to strategically connect with the right people because recommendations from them makes a big difference most times. Here are some steps to effectively build and utilize your network: ➥ LinkedIn: Create a strong LinkedIn profile, join relevant groups, and connect with professionals in your field. ➥ Academic networks: Use platforms like ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and professional societies’ online communities to connect with researchers and academics. ➥ Actively participate in conferences, workshops, and seminars related to your field of study (attend virtually if in person is not possible). Ask questions, engage in discussions, and connect with speakers and participants to establish relationships. ➥ Join student organizations: Become active in student groups, clubs, and professional associations. These platforms provide networking opportunities with peers and professionals. ➥ Seek Faculty mentorship for guidance. They can introduce you to valuable contacts within your field. ➥ Volunteer for events, conferences, and research projects that can help you meet people and demonstrate your commitment. ➥ Follow up: After initial meetings or introductions, follow up with an email or message to express your appreciation and continue the conversation. Overall, focus on building authentic relationships rather than transactional interactions. Show genuine interest in others’ work and offer help where possible. Have you ever benefited from strategic networking? Repost ♻️ to help aspiring graduate students. #networking #mentoring #scholarships

Don't Apply for That Degree Yet—Do These Instead! As immigrant career professionals, the journey to career success can often seem like a straight line to getting more degrees. Raise your hand, if you have enrolled in a degree program immediately you moved to a new country. It took me 3 years after arriving Canada before applying for a masters program. So, to the new immigrant, before you dive into another academic program, here are steps to consider: 1. Assess Your Goals Define what you truly want in your career. Most people jump into a course or program because a friend talked them into it. Ensure that another degree aligns with your long-term plan, not the suggestions of your friend. 2. Leverage Your Existing Skills Identify your transferable skills and how they can open new opportunities. Seek projects or roles that maximize your current expertise. 3. Network Strategically Build meaningful connections within your industry. Join professional groups and attend events to expand your network. Gather market intelligence from people in your field. 4. Gain Practical Experience Look for volunteer work, or part-time jobs in your field of interest or that jobs that helps you integrate into the work culture. Practical experience can often weigh more than additional academic credentials. 5. Seek Mentorship Find mentors who can provide guidance and insights into your career path. Learn from their experiences and apply their advice to your journey. 6. Enhance Soft Skills Communication, leadership, problem-solving, emotional intelligence skills are invaluable. Take courses or workshops to strengthen these areas. Oftentimes, what gets you the job is not the technical skills, but the soft skills. Remember, your journey is unique. Sometimes, the most significant growth comes from experiences outside the classroom. Agree? Share your thoughts in the comment. _______ ❤️ if this resonates with you. ♻️ Repost to help a new immigrant. 🔔 follow Emeka Nwarulor for more in the future.

Success in the early days is a simple equation… Career Success = # of papers * impact The only thing you will be judged on to decide whether you make it to the next step of your career is how many papers you have and in what journals. Everything else is trivial. Seniors mislead their juniors when they say networking is important. Seniors can network because they have already made a name for themselves. They already have skills and experience to offer others. They can leverage their prior work to make new opportunities and collaborate on projects they otherwise couldn’t achieve alone. Juniors can’t. Because they don’t have anything to offer yet. Acheive your goals. Publish papers (many and as high impact as possible). THEN you can network. Publish first, bump elbows later. #science #phd #networking
