Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) is a serious but under-discussed issue in global public health. A common and fast-growing use of antibiotics is in the agricultural sector, where they are used to maximize growth and reduce disease outbreaks in crowded animal facilities. This contributes to the spread of AMR, and it’s why AMR is closely connected to #SDG2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. With a more sustainable food system, we can slow AMR’s spread—check out this slideshow to learn more! [Made in collaboration with Shot@Life College Ambassador Ashley Chon.]

Congratulations to the FAO SOFA team! As an Advisory Group member, I am proud to have contributed to this process. The 2024 SOFA edition features an updated estimate of hidden costs in global food systems, amounting to 11.6 trillion 2020 PPP dollars across 156 countries. I recommend consulting the annex for country-specific figures, which break down hidden costs into environmental (GHG emissions, land-use changes, nitrogen), social (worker poverty, undernourishment), and health-related costs (dietary risks like high processed food intake, low plant-based food, and insufficient beneficial fatty acids). Additionally, annex includes country-specific estimates of health hidden costs by dietary patterns. The report is rich with examples of True Cost Accounting (TCA) in action, demonstrating how TCA principles can support the transformation of national food systems. Notable examples include Switzerland’s multi-stakeholder dialogue on hidden agrifood system costs, India’s community-based natural farming initiatives in Andhra Pradesh, Brazil’s urban agriculture national program, and the hidden costs within the coffee value chain in East African countries. The report also highlights the World Banana Forum’s efforts on living wages and farm income, as well as contributions from food chain actors like the German retailer PENNY, which piloted the introduction of true prices in a supermarket. Additionally, policy cases, such as Chile’s food labeling law and New York City's procurement policy favoring low-carbon, plant-rich, whole foods, are featured. Policy practitioners will find the systematic information on policy levers for food systems transformation particularly valuable. This edition also includes a wealth of references, including the forthcoming guide, How and When to Use True Cost Accounting: Guidance for National Governments.
The @FAO State of Food and Agriculture 2024 report refines the hidden environmental, social and health costs in #agrifood systems across 156 countries. ⚠️These costs amount to about $12 trillion, with the majority ($8 trillion) arising from unhealthy dietary patterns. Globally, they are primarily driven by low consumption of whole grains and fruit and overconsumption of sodium. These costs affect us all, though not equally. Substituting meat and dairy with more plant-based foods in our diets can achieve benefits for human and environmental health: this is a well-known fact. What’s perhaps less known is that these benefits can vary widely, depending on precisely which animal-based foods are displaced, a new study finds. https://lnkd.in/gVsjiHjE

Fantastic State of Food and Agriculture Report #SOFA published by FAO and led by Andrea Cattaneo. Following the 2023 report, this year, they further refined the global hidden costs of the food system. The costs exceed 10 trillion bucks! Unhealthy dietary patterns account for 70% of those costs. They also did an interesting analysis using the Food Systems Dashboard food typologies (Thank you for using them!). They found that industrial and diversifying food systems account for the highest global quantified hidden costs (amounting to 5.9 trillion 2020 PPP dollars), with health hidden costs dominating the price tag. The 2024 edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World #SOFI2024 report, to be launched on July 24, takes a deep dive into salient themes regarding financing for development, in particular financing for food security and nutrition to meet the targets of #SDG2, with the aim of creating better identifying opportunities, strengthening accountability and traceability, and ultimately improving financing productivity. Some aspects and findings of the United Nations flagship report were highlighted today at the Special Event on Financing to End Hunger, Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in All its Forms, within the United Nations Economic and Social Council High-Level Political Forum in New York. Speaking through a video message, FAO Director-General, QU Dongyu, noted that more, better-targeted and less risk-averse financing is needed to move the world closer to eradicating hunger.
