I'm really grateful to Slator for inviting me on the SlatorPod podcast to speak about the impact of large language models on the translation industry 👐
The real, hard question is this: What kind of future do we want to build for the translation industry?
If there's a shared understanding that human translators will always be needed in our industry, then how can we build a sustainable future in which all everyone can thrive? How can upskill, train and fairly remunerate translators to make working in our industry an attractive prospect, and avoid a 'brain drain' of brilliant experts leaving the industry, taking their in-depth knowledge and expertise with them?
We need much more open, respectful and nuanced discussion on this topic – discussion that brings together all stakeholders in our industry: translators, language service providers, tech companies, academia and translation associations.
We all have a role to play in shaping the future of our industry. And there is an opportunity to come together, here and now, to find common ground, and a collaborative way forward.
Any suggestions on how to bring everyone together to start the conversation?
