Drawing from the rich narratives of sci-fi-inspired worlds, our Detroit studio's Film and Editorial Director, Nicholas Sullivan, takes us through his career. Sharing insights on key influences, work highlights, the not-so-great moments, and what’s next. "It’s important to revisit your not-so-great work and determine why they didn’t work and how they can be improved. What I’ve learned is that most failures come down to lack of preparation. Sometimes it’s controllable, other times it’s not, but learning to prepare what you can, and fight for control where you can’t, has given me a greater appreciation for filmmakers like Nolan. Those who manage every detail with an intense, micromanager style. I’ll refrain from calling out any one piece of work, partner or client. We’ve all been there." I like this post from Val as I've been noticing this same transformation myself. In the music industry, long gone are the times when you'd get at best a single or two from your favorite band in 2-5 years between albums. Now, artists don't bother with albums, a single is enough. It is faster to produce one (and keep listeners more engaged), you can make a single track better sounding when you don't have to think about how it fits in the concept of your album, and you can afford to spend more time polishing just one track. Streaming money is dripping, so why bother and live in a studio for years? Based on the chart in your post, I'd say I'm somewhere between the first two cultures – traditional and modern: I watch sports but don't play, I read newsletters and ask Gemini or ChatGPT to give me a summary of an article before reading it in full (this helps avoid reading "noise"), I prefer movies over videos, I'm a 100% an albums listener, I don't care about images a lot, I prefer emails and messengers, and I am an old-school monogamous partner. What's my take on the dopamine culture? I don't know where it leads us, but I don't want to be a part of it. I try to spend less time on my phone and choose productivity apps like Duolingo, email, and tailored news. I've prioritized reading this year and starting to remember how reading used to bring me joy. Movies are more time-consuming than videos, so watching shows on YouTube is still a choice, but that's more a family thing (I like watching my favorite movies over and over, and my wife prefers shows, so I obey). When it comes to music, I am one of those who patiently listened to all of the Tool's albums hundreds of times and was the happiest person on Earth when they dropped an album after 13 years of silence. This shift in me trying to rebuild my focus muscle started after I read the "Stolen Focus" by Johann Hari. A very powerful book that highlights the importance of being able to focus on one task for long periods of time and how this is becoming a forgotten skill. It is becoming a very valuable asset in the world of TikToks, Instagram stories, ADHD, and a decline in reading. This skill is something I would deliberately develop as a young professional. Not saying that it doesn't apply to the older generations, but it feels like younger ones are more affected by the inability to focus. My advice? Read for at least 30 minutes every day, stay away from your phone as long as possible, learn to meditate, go for a walk without headphones, learn to prioritize your tasks.
Instead of movies, users now enjoy an endless sequence of 15-second videos. Instead of symphonies, listeners experience bite-sized melodies, often paired with these tiny videos—providing just the right amount of a dopamine hit. Everything is gamified. Anything can be scrollable. You can simulate any boat you row. The reality has evolved. It’s an exciting transformation. But what does this mean for our brains? Our lives? Our future? Time will reveal the fascinating answers.

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe. It is the second-largest European country after Russia, which borders it to the east and northeast. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in an escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War that started in 2014. The invasion became the largest attack on a European country since World War II. It is estimated to have caused tens of thousands of Ukrainian civilian casualties and hundreds of thousands of military casualties. By June 2022, Russian troops occupied about 20% of Ukrainian territory. From a population of 41 million in January 2022, about 8 million Ukrainians had been internally displaced and more than 8.2 million had fled the country by April 2023, creating Europe's largest refugee crisis since World War II. Extensive environmental damage caused by the war, widely described as an ecocide, contributed to food crises worldwide.
Meet Fo Sho, the queens of Ukrainian hip-hop. Now displaced by war, they exchange stories and jam with YouTube creator Jax Jones in our short film series with YouTube and Uncommon Creative Studio, "We Were Here", now nominated for The Webby Awards! There is no such thing as a "greatest game of all time". But if it did, it would probably be Half-Life 2. The game celebrates 20 years since release today. Don't let its sad tone fool you; if you play games, I strongly encourage you to give it a go. Critics were enamoured by the physics engine and its likeness to realism, and I have seen games come out this year with physics or textures not as good Half-Life 2. I guarantee something here will humour you and impress you. A seesaw, a refrigerator, a dune buggy, something will. Last year, during the original's 25th anniversary, I spoke about the theme of individualism in both instalments. HL2 is more literal and extravagant, but still compelling. In all media, not just games, I don’t know a more dehumanising villain I’ve seen than the Combine empire. Humanity gets Children of Men'd, the police junta are cybernetic humans who jumped on the bandwagon, the puppet ruler insists hanging onto human instinct is like the primordial soup that dissuaded us leaving the oceans. It's pessimistic, but you're still fighting. The Combine’s Orwellian voice uses clinical terminology to find resistance, like the planet is an organ – and rebellious humans are only contaminated cells trying to infect it. We know how the human body defends itself from an infection. It's demeaning, but you're still fighting. And I know everyone memes it, but the bridge scene really is that effective! Kelly Bailey's imposing ambient score makes you realise that all you've been doing is running away. To the point where you are climbing the foundation structure of a bridge just to keep running away from the Combine. You really are an ant in their eyes. But you're still fighting. Near the end of the game, you break into their headquarters. There’s a good moment showing all the enemy classes you've beaten still going strong. Immediately afterwards, a security system vaporises your weapons barring the gravity-manipulating gun, now inadvertently overcharged to help you fight your way up. For a moment of awe, you are the most powerful thing on Earth. When you voluntarily give it up, you're subdued and showed a second sequence of new, seemingly unstoppable monsters you have never met. It is the most extreme endpoint of industry. Just keep spreading until... well, not even “until.” It's futile, but you're still fighting. 20 years on, retrospective reviews have only kept the game's legacy strong. It was cheekily unplayable unless you subscribed to Steam, Valve's then-new service for playing PC games. Even today, Steam is the de facto way to play games on PC. With Garry's Mod, its community keeps energising its place in culture, from Freeman's Mind to Skibidi Toilet. I don't think people realise just how different my generation would be without Half-Life 2. Check it out, and keep fighting. In the meantime, this is where I get off.
