World Economic Forum highlights a critical issue: the EU is lagging in its digital transformation efforts. I am pleased to share the release of the Institute for Competitiveness, India and Stanford University US-Asia Technology Management Center's collaborative report on #G20 and #multilateralism, which I had the pleasure of co-authoring. As a forum that was borne out of an economic crisis, the study examines the evolution of the G20 agenda over the years and how the discourse has shifted towards the inclusion of social and environmental concerns. G20 commitments, lacking legal binding, derive their legitimacy from their ‘recall value’ – how strongly they can be recalled based on the specificity and measurability of goals committed to. In this context, the language of the Leaders’ Declaration holds immense importance. Our study employs a mix of textual content analysis and linguistic analysis, mapping the text to the #SDGs, to draw insights into the G20's evolving agenda and priorities. Furthermore, the study delves deeper into India’s G20 presidency, which is marked by significant contexts like its temporal alignment with the midpoint of the 2030 agenda, and it being the first G20 troika comprised wholly of developing countries. With the African Union’s inclusion, the G20 now accounts for 80% of the global population, nearly 89% of the world’s GDP, and covers 79% of global trade. Underpinned by the growing role of the #GlobalSouth in global governance, it is essential for our multilateral forums to foster greater inclusivity - both in representation and agenda-setting. This evolution is paramount for collectively tackling the multifaceted challenges of our interconnected world. All 17 SDGs Work Together for the Common Good I am deeply honored to represent SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) at the Summit of the Future Action Day 2. The summit kicked off with an inspiring opening ceremony, followed by a packed schedule addressing critical global issues. The sessions focused on: • A Digital Future for All • A Peaceful Future for All • A Sustainable Future for All At the Digital Future for All, minister from Singapore, Sweden, Zambia, and other nations joined forces with major tech companies such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft to tackle one of the most pressing challenges of our time—Governing AI for Humanity. Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced a groundbreaking commitment of $120 Million for AI education and training worldwide. Furthermore, the release of "Governing AI for Humanity" was unveiled during the summit. James Manyika from Google emphasized that multistakeholder collaboration is essential to ensure the responsible development and use of AI. This includes transparency, trust, and accountability with end users. The principles of Trust, Universality, and Solidarity, derived from A New Agenda for Peace, alongside the 2030 Agenda's focus on multistakeholder partnerships and sustainable development financing, are central to turbocharging progress on the SDGs. It was an incredible panel discussion on how to build a Diverse Talent Pipeline! We explored effective strategies for initiating and implementing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) measures within companies and learned how to attract diverse and skilled talent across the sector💡 Mentorship programs, leadership actively promoting inclusion in the sector and employee resource groups were highlighted as impactful strategies discussed during the session. My key learnings from the session on South-South Collaboration: Building a Resilient Future for the Global South #dpw2024 Dasra Building a resilient future for the Global South necessitates a paradigm shift towards South-South collaboration, where collaboration stands as the linchpin. The Global South isn't a linear entity but a diverse tapestry comprising multiple countries at various stages of development, spanning vast geographical regions from China to the Pacific Islands. To foster resilience, it's imperative to establish frameworks rooted in principles of sovereignty, respect, and equity, ensuring the inclusion of voices from marginalised communities. Recent summits hosted by India underscore the importance of unity of voice and purpose within the Global South, emphasising the need to reframe narratives through regional and geopolitical lenses. At the heart of South-South Collaboration lies solidarity and human-centered development, facilitating resource sharing and cross-learning initiatives, aimed at codifying resources, promoting continuous learning, and fostering inclusive practices. Speakers also underscored the importance of non-prescriptive, contextually relevant solutions, essential for addressing the diverse needs of communities across the Global South.
