Wind electricity output decreased by 40% in 2023, and a similar slowdown in 2024 could cause power producers to struggle to maintain electricity supply levels without relying on fossil fuels. Solar farms can provide additional power, but their capacity is half that of wind, and they can only produce electricity during daylight hours. LCOE doesn't tell the whole story. As an energy professional, I've seen firsthand how this metric can be misleading. Here's what LCOE misses: 1. Grid integration costs 2. Backup power requirements 3. Transmission infrastructure 4. System balancing expenses 5. Environmental externalities These "hidden costs" can significantly impact the true price of renewable energy. Example: In the UK, balancing costs jumped from £1.8B to £4.2B in just 3 years as renewables increased. We need a more comprehensive approach.
