SHPE 2024 - A Story of Leadership & Some Feedback One of the most memorable moments from SHPE 2024 happened on the first day of the career fair. It was 4:00 AM 🕓, and a line had already started forming, filled with eager attendees hoping to get ahead. By 5:30 AM, the crowd had grown restless 😓, and the tension was palpable. That’s when Saad Bahlouli stepped up and did something remarkable. With a voice full of courage 💪, he called out to the crowd: “Let’s be civilized and turn this into a single file before they have to manage us.” His words cut through the early morning chaos, and what happened next was inspiring—a roaring applause 👏 erupted from the crowd as everyone followed his lead. In that moment, Saad demonstrated true leadership, turning what could have been a stressful situation into one of unity and mutual respect 🤝. It’s individuals like Saad who remind us of the importance of community and stepping up when it matters most. These are the moments we should celebrate at SHPE—where leadership isn’t just about titles but about action 🔥. Aside from lining up during ungodly hours 🌙 and some logistical issues with luncheon tickets 🎟️, there were definitely areas for improvement. Hopefully, future conventions can address these challenges to enhance the overall experience! On a positive note, I loved Qualcomm's approach to talent acquisition—roaming the convention hall, handpicking individuals who resonated with their values on a personal level. A unique and effective strategy! 💼 To all the companies I connected with—thank you! It truly means the world to me to have met so many talented and deserving individuals making a difference in the world! 🌍✨ #Leadership #EventFeedback #Community #SHPE2024 #CareerFair #Inspiration #Qualcomm

Happy birthday Karen Richard MBA! There are few friendships I value more than ours. And on this very special day, I want to share one of the many things that makes you so amazing. As everyone knows, Andersen Corporation has been one of my biggest supporters since the inception of the People Of Color Career Fair™. You personally always do your best to stop by and support your recruiting team, and expand your own networks. But what you did this past year deserves special recognition. You asked me if you could get more involved personally, and dedicate your personal time on weekends and evenings to coach Professionals of Color who are well on their way to big things in the Twin Cities. I asked you how many Professionals, thinking you'd coach two or three, and you told me 60! I almost fell off my chair. I was so excited to know 60 People Of Color Career Fair attendees would get to one-on-one coaching with one of the most respected C-Suite executives in our region. And let me tell you, the Professionals that you met with will never forget it! The feedback I received was tremendous, and the insights you shared nearly impossible to come by unless someone in your position agrees to share. This is what "Leading Out Loud" is always about, and so very often, you're who I point to when other executives ask me what they can do to better expand their diverse talent networks! Karen, this, and so many other reasons are what make you a one of a kind. I hope you have the best birthday ever! #HappyBirthday #CorporateLeadership #BusinessLeader #BirthdayGirl #ProfessionalCoach

WOW..WOW...WOW... For the third time in a row, Interswitch Group has consistently ensured the gathering of incredible professionals who have once again ignited my passion at the just concluded Interswitch Career Fair 3.0. The inspiring words shared during this edition have sparked a firm resolve within me to stand out and make a real difference. Here are some of the key takeaways that resonated with me: · Soft life comes after hard work. · Conduct performance appraisals on your life regularly. · Do not let money be the only driving factor in your career, have multiple sources of income so that you won't be dependent on money alone. · We are in the skills market, not the job market. So, invest in skills. · Sometimes it is better you are out of a job, so you can have a clear head. · You are a product of your decision, if you do not like where you are then change your decision. · Aim to have a skill that is global, skills that will be relevant in the next 10 years. · Resilience is not about not falling when the wind has blown, it is about bouncing back. · There is pain and endurance in creating meaningful work accept that fact. · In the beginning, prioritize learning over earning. · Where we are headed is most definitely a function of the image in our head of what we want to become. · It is okay to transition as many times as you want, we are human 'beings' we are supposed to evolve and not remain stagnant. · There are seasons in life, a time to learn and earn. Understand the season where you are and give yourself grace. Thank you, Interswitch Group for, for this invaluable experience. I eagerly await the next chapter "Interswitch Career Fair 4.0"

Ever wondered how to turn a career fair conversation into a job offer? These incredible panelists shared the strategies to make it happen. A big thank you to Jesse Marrow of The Cigna Group, Miriam Ortiz of The Jackson Laboratory, and Hartford Promise Scholars Ashley Townsend and Kobe Hamilton for sharing their expertise and advice during our Career Fest Prep Session this week! Ashley, recently accepted into Cigna’s Technology Development Program, and Kobe, who will soon begin working full time at The Hartford, joined Jesse and Miriam to help scholars get ready for our upcoming Career Fest in January. Here’s what they shared: 🎯 Research is key: Be intentional by researching companies ahead of time—asking, “What does your company do?” is a big no-no. 🎯 Share your story: Your personal background and experiences are your power—connect them to the company’s mission to make a lasting impression. 🎯 Resume tips: Highlight relevant skills and experiences while avoiding common mistakes to stand out to employers. 🎯 Build aligned experience: Internships or career-related roles are invaluable—even if you’re already working to support yourself or your family. 🎯 Stand out with strategy: From crafting a strong elevator pitch to asking thoughtful, specific questions, preparation sets you apart. Thank you to our panelists for encouraging Hartford Promise Scholars to approach Career Fest with confidence, purpose, and curiosity. We can’t wait to see all the incredible connections and opportunities that come from this event. The future is bright! 💼✨ P.S. If you’re a recruiter looking for exceptional talent and haven’t signed up for our Career Fest yet, spots are filling fast—we’d love to have you join us! #CareerFest #HartfordPromise #ReachingHigher

Here's how you can increase employer engagement for your school's career activities. You see, last week at Greater London Authority's Enterprise Coordinator Day I had a little rant... Why do we ask Business to attend careers fairs as if they're doing us a favour? We need to be clearer about the business 'value' of engaging with young people's careers. What are you doing to encourage business engagement at your school? #authenticengagement #employerengagement #careerfair #ncw2024

I had a recent opportunity to represent Gallagher at BSU's career fair. Afterwards, during conversation with peers, I was asked "Was it a success?" - as in, was it worth my time. Here is what I learned: -We have some amazingly talented and impressive young adults in our society! -Have a strategic goal and execute. My goal was to identify Summer Interns, not to “sell” Gallagher. I wanted to "thin the herd" for our hiring team, not accumulate hundreds of resumes to pass along. So, I prepared ahead of time with what questions to ask in order to accomplish this. -Go with a servant leadership mindset. It can be kind of awkward at times, so I would often start with “How can I help you?”. It broke the ice and built trust with the students immediately. -Many students do not know what they want to do. Help them by being curious, asking open-ended questions and sharing personal stories about the mistakes and challenges that you encountered during your personal journey. So, YES, I think it was a success for these 3 reasons: -I was able to narrow down our candidates, which will lead to more efficiency. -By being curious, I was able to help students in other ways that were not a fit for our internship either because of geography, skill set or timing. You can still help! Make connections for them, challenge their thinking and introduce them to new ideas that may not be on their radar. -Personally, I left with much gratitude and a lot of confidence in our future leaders! And, I even ran into a few of my son's buddies who wanted to take a picture and send it to my family. I guess that means I am getting old 😁 #thegallagherway #careerfair #mentorship #servantleadership

When I asked Google to define "personal brand" for me this morning, it provided the following answer: "A personal brand is a deliberate and strategic way of defining and expressing your values, skills, and experiences to others." Next, I asked it to tell me how to showcase my personal brand physically to others at an event. There were loads of suggestions for things to do in a digital environment but as far as physically in person at an event...the suggestions were sparse, at best. (But thanks to Midjourney for its attempt at tackling the question visually, below). A challenging question translates into a fun opportunity for our MS in Marketing Class of 2025, next Wednesday (10/16) at the annual Reverse Career Fair. This event flips the traditional "job fair" model upside down with students being offered a blank slate (i.e. a table and a table cloth) to utilize creatively to tell their story and advertise their expertise in any creative modality they elect to pursue. Intrigued at what the results will look like among this talented group of Department of Marketing at the University of Tennessee graduate students? Me too. Please accept our invitation to join us here on Rocky Top on 10/16 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM (come when you can and stay as long as you are able) to see the answer to a challenging question come to life. Parking, light refreshments, powerful networking, and creative collaborations are just a few of the things you'll take away from this event. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗦𝗩𝗣 𝗮𝘁 tiny.utk.edu/reversecareer All are welcome and the gift of your time is deeply appreciated.

October 22nd was the People of Color Career Fair, The Premier Networking and Hiring Experience for Professionals of Color in the Twin Cities! “As we recap the 2024 People of Color Career Fair, I’m reminded how crucial representation is in every step of the job search and hiring process. At LatinoLEAD, we are proud to partner in creating spaces where Latine professionals see themselves reflected and valued. Representation doesn’t just inspire; it opens doors to equitable opportunities, ensuring that our community’s talent, voices, and contributions are fully recognized. Together, we’re strengthening the workforce and advancing a vision where everyone belongs and thrives.” – Karen Velez Barron, LatinoLEAD COO Our CEO, Irma Márquez Trapero, and Sharon Smith-Akinsanya, CEO of the Rae Mackenzie Group, Inc. held a fireside chat where they shared the importance of Diversity across the board. Diversity is not only about entry-level representation; it's about ensuring that professionals of color have access to all levels of an organization, including senior leadership and decision-making roles. More partnerships like LatinoLEAD and the People of Color Career Fair ensure that diversity is institutionalized throughout organizations, creating a pipeline for advancement. This results in more professionals of color serving as managers, directors, executives, and board members, which has a cascading effect on organizational culture, decision-making, and strategy. #WeAreLatinoLEAD #Somos LatinoLEAD #PeopleOfColorCareerFair #MinneapolisEvent #Networking #WorkforceDevelopment #Diversity #Inclusion
