Paper of the day: Modernization of Databases in the Cloud Era - Building Databases that Run like Legos Interesting paper of building modern cloud native databases, that also take specific hardware like FPGAs into account. We're on track again to really make use of the hardware, compared to just move everything into cloud, as it's becoming more expensive than everyone thought initially. Also the idea of being more picky about not scaling CPU along with memory but being able to chose where needed will get more attention. The paper is a summary by Alibaba's PolarDB team and how they sped it up.

Traditional cloud storage is inherently slow because it is accessed over a network and must synchronize many clients. But what if we could instead put your application code deep into the storage layer, such that your code runs where the data is stored? Durable Objects with SQLite do just that.
