The example is related to Walmart and founder Sam Walton. “Deep in Mr. Sam’s DNA was a #passion to do right by the customer. He said that the #customer was the only one who can fire the #CEO, by spending his or her money someplace else.” - Roy (P 67) Question 🙋: Do you have a deep passion to do right by the customer? Do those in your circle of care? Do those who lead you? If “yes” isn’t the immediate answer to each of the questions, step into a #leadership void and spark a conversation. I love the story about Sara Blakely taking a Neiman Marcus Buyer to the ladies’ room to demonstrate her product, Spanx. Would this strategy align with conventional business wisdom? Unlikely. But Blakely built a billion-dollar business with $5,000, a great idea, and a lot of tenacity. She reminds us to embrace the unknown and use inexperience as an opportunity to innovate. In my career, my biggest successes have come from new areas of opportunity. When I stepped in to lead a team through a business model transformation, it was like walking into a different world. I handled high-stakes negotiations, piloted new processes, and managed change for a business resistant to new ways. Initially, I felt out of my depth. But sticking with it taught me that innovation often comes from stepping outside our comfort zones and tackling the unfamiliar head-on. I admire Sara Blakely’s courage. Forging a different path isn't easy, but it's where growth happens and new paths to success are discovered. What’s your experience with stepping into the unknown? It was encouraging to hear Ronnie speak so clearly about the unwavering direction the company has maintained. It was remarkable to hear about how successful they have been by staying focused on their segment of the diamond supply chain, and never trying to expand beyond the DC market. He also spoke about the way in which they recruit, hire, and support their employees. Their training and benefits, and overall treatment of their people has created the engine to drive their success. No other jewelry company can claim they have no shrinkage in inventory. And I once watched Joan Rivers on The Tonight Show describe a Montana fashion show . . . . . . “Women gather round a SEARS Catalog and – as pages turn – clap if an outfit speaks to them.” I remember laughing because, well, it was funny. And then I remember pulling back. Because, hey, that wasn’t a Montana fashion show.  A Montana fashion show was my sisters and me going to town with our Mom – in the Country Sedan – and paging through the Butterick Pattern Book. And the Simplicity Pattern Book. Page by page. Fingers tracing each and every outfit that spoke to us. And we were able to select patterns and fabric – thread, buttons and zippers to match.  And Mom would make them. Something chosen by us. Something tailored by Mom. Something wonderfully bespoke. And we could feel the difference. Now, I do not have my Mom’s brilliant dressmaking skills . . . Our West Manchester peer group enjoyed a great visit to Laltex Group Promotional Merchandise earlier this week, hosted by their CEO Sanjay Mulchand. Sanjay delivered an insightful presentation on how he and his team have have approached growth and change within the business, and how they are navigating their future goals and aspirations. The theme for the meeting was focused on how to create a vivid vision that will inspire and motivate the whole team. Some of the great ideas shared amongst the members of the peer group were: 💡 Not everyone has the capacity to think long term and be visionary. Some people’s time horizon is days and weeks, not months and years. Include people in your strategic visioning process that have the capacity to think long term. 💡 Avoid creating the vision for the future of your business on your own. Include your key people in your visioning process to gain their ideas and buy-in into the future of the business. The more diverse the group, the better. 💡 For managers that don’t make the time to step back from the day to day and plan ahead, are they being pulled into the muck and bullets through necessity or because that is where they are most comfortable? Firefighters love firefighting. 💡 Think deeply about why you are doing all of this. Why do you want to achieve the things you want to achieve? What is the purpose of it? Why is it meaningful to you? It’s hard to put into words the value our members gain, and the depth of relationships within our peer groups. As you can see from the picture, our members love to have fun while they are making a difference in the world.
