I find it most heartening that Minister Josephine Teo started her COS 2024 speech by citing the #smartnation vision of “a Singapore where people are more empowered to live meaningful and fulfilled lives, enabled seamlessly by technology, offering exciting opportunities for all.” To me, this is important for 2 reasons: 1. Philosophically, it directs us to pursue a form of success that everyone can participate in regardless of their station in life. This is because meaningful life ensues from engaging in activities that contribute towards a larger purpose beyond material achievements. 2. Practically, it guides us in applying technology to build solutions that will benefit everyone. In this case, centering on meaning can unlock the intrinsic human values to support a more balanced approach to achieving happiness, prosperity and progress. Her speech also jogged my memory about my reason for starting giving.sg a decade ago to nudge people to live meaningful lives through giving. The experience has affirmed my belief that micro actions can lead to macro change. I have no doubt that technological advances will continue to provide us with the means to build a better future together. Interesting Discovery by Guan Hong Tan, seems like Singapore Universities don't teach in-depth Electronics Circuitry Design anymore; or rather, they do Research in new Science. While basic fundamentals might be highlighted, Industrialization skillset is lacking and hence the inability to achieve robustness and hardening for Practical applications. Singapore Ministry of Education MOE doesn't certify Universities curriculum, because no Teacher at MOE HQ can be qualified to do so as Subject Matter Expert, certainly not Applied into Industry, while No Practitioner invited to assist. The gap between Research and Applied has increased tremendously since pre-covid, likely Gen-AI, Computer Science and the New IT take precedence - No longer vocational SkillsFuture within Tertiary Education System. My greatest fear and worry, can Singapore Manufacturing sector survive this drought of vocational training as SkillsFuture? Let's hear from you 🌱

🇭🇰 Universities in HK are world class, but their research is underutilized -- commercially. A 2022 article by HK Legislative Council asserted HK's insufficient support for commercializing research, comparing HK to Shenzhen with its wide range of support. The article listed out the limitations of HK: conservative university policies, slow development in the innovation ecosystem, and insufficient university-industry collaboration. Meanwhile, Shenzhen has introduced several attractive measures for innovators, such as its talent scheme -- "In 2022, each individual would receive at least RMB1.6 million (HK$1.9 million) under the programme alongside housing and other benefits." I'm sure such observations led to the launch of funding schemes like RAISe+, and HK has so much higher potential to be revealed.
