2H Huawei and Humor "There's no way the US can crush us. The world cannot leave us because we are more advanced. Even if they persuade more countries not to use us temporarily, we can always scale things down a bit." "I can summarize the painful lesson in one sentence: We must not slack off or allow mediocrity, and we must remain dedicated and inspire passion throughout the organization." "Academic freedom is the foundation of innovation. The freedom to have different academic ideas and to study whatever you want is very important. Undoubtedly, the US has the world's most innovation-friendly environment. Thanks to the Internet, people have easier access to information. Science and engineering papers have nothing to do with ideology, so they can be published and shared all over the world." Ren Zhengfei, founder of Huawei

Alien? No, a researching student! Grigorij Asafov is a master's student in our M&M program. He is currently at the TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, where he is researching how spatial computing can contribute to business practice. His empirical study compares how different levels of immersion affect creativity and problem solving in a management context. In his research, he is using the Apple Vision Pro device (#AVP), as you can see on the photo. His local host is Prof. Vladimir Kuts. 💬 How is life in Estonia 🇪🇪? Cool, Inspiring, and Digitalized. 💬Key challenges: Managing a comprehensive data collection during summer break - and not getting too much distracted by the beauty of the country. Enjoy the remaining time in Estonia, Grigorij!

#NYCU Partners with VIS to Launch #Digital #Semiconductor Course: Advancing Educational Equity and Providing Quality Resources for Remote and Offshore #High Schools National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (#NYCU) in Taiwan has joined forces with Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation (#VIS) to create the “Introduction to Semiconductor Principles and Manufacturing” digital learning course for high school students. The digital course helps bridge the gap in the educational resources between urban and rural areas, providing valuable teaching support for remote and offshore high schools. Launched in the 2024 academic year, the course has already been adopted by 44 high schools as part of their elective curricula, with enrollment surpassing 1,000 students. NYCU’s Digital Course Empowers #Remote #High Schools in Semiconductor Education Ken-Zen Chen, Deputy Director of NYCU’s Higher Education Resources for Openness (#HERO) Research Center, highlighted that urban high schools, with abundant resources and proximity to universities, often find it easier to offer diverse electives. In contrast, remote and offshore schools face significant challenges in tailoring elective courses to student needs. I find it most heartening that Minister Josephine Teo started her COS 2024 speech by citing the #smartnation vision of “a Singapore where people are more empowered to live meaningful and fulfilled lives, enabled seamlessly by technology, offering exciting opportunities for all.” To me, this is important for 2 reasons: 1. Philosophically, it directs us to pursue a form of success that everyone can participate in regardless of their station in life. This is because meaningful life ensues from engaging in activities that contribute towards a larger purpose beyond material achievements. 2. Practically, it guides us in applying technology to build solutions that will benefit everyone. In this case, centering on meaning can unlock the intrinsic human values to support a more balanced approach to achieving happiness, prosperity and progress. Her speech also jogged my memory about my reason for starting giving.sg a decade ago to nudge people to live meaningful lives through giving. The experience has affirmed my belief that micro actions can lead to macro change. I have no doubt that technological advances will continue to provide us with the means to build a better future together. The question is whether we are harnessing it for the benefit of all. #sgbudget2024 #forwardsg #techforpublicgood NCS Group SGTech Singapore Computer Society NUS-ISS Alumni Community NVPC - Towards a City of Good

Help IEEE contribute to worldwide digital inclusion by submitting a novel, early-stage project or concept that offers unique ways to increase Internet access and usage for the 2.9 billion unconnected people around the world. The global 2024 IEEE Connecting the Unconnected Challenge is now open for submissions of unique solutions to bridge the digital divide. Deadline is 18 June. Internet access is critical to education, industry, and healthy living. Unconnected populations lack access to buy and sell goods and services online. Unconnected students lack access to the flourishing remote education market. The IEEE Connecting the Unconnected Challenge seeks to further connectivity by calling for early-stage projects and concepts that pursue unique ways to increase broadband access and usage for unconnected or under-connected populations/geographies. Start-ups, grassroots organizations, universities, and others working toward digital inclusion in original ways are encouraged to participate. Last year’s challenge awarded 16 teams across multiple categories. Read the competition rules and learn about how to enter your novel projects at the CTU website: https://ctu.ieee.org/

Stumbled upon an old relic today – a hot water flask proudly sporting the Huawei University logo and a powerful inscription: "小胜靠智大胜在德". This translates to "Small victories rely on wisdom, great victories depend on virtue." A simple yet profound quote that resonated deeply during my time at Huawei. The experience (and the flask!) served as a constant reminder that success, at its core, transcends technical expertise. It's about approaching every challenge with both strategic thinking and unwavering integrity. True success, like a perfectly brewed cup of tea, requires more than just intellectual prowess. It's about character, integrity, and the wisdom to use knowledge for good. #lifelonglearning #integrity #learningeveryday #confucius #quotesforlife Huawei

I've just completed this Fellowship, and I can highly recommend it to anyone who is passionate about making AI a force for good in the world. The EU is taking a lead role in AI Governance with the AI Act and the new AI Office. But the EU also has a lead role in the use of AI for Innovation. And a huge role in the Chips supply chain, on which AI depends, thanks especially to ASML in the Netherlands. I know all the "techies" have been following all these developments, but what I'm hoping is that more of the innovators and experienced scientists and (non-IT) engineers will also get involved. Because we bring a huge amount to the discussion, both in terms of how AI can help make the world better and in terms of best practices in Safety and Risk Management. For most people, the concept of finding the right balance between the potential of AI and the risks is a novel idea. For those of us who've worked in R&D as chemists and engineers, handling solvents and liquid Nitrogen or working with acids at 10 bar, balancing innovation and safety considerations comes naturally. We know how to find the win/win solutions and the sweet-spots. (If you follow AI debates on Twitter (X), you probably notice a depressing tendency towards a form of partisanship - one group saying that AI is perfectly safe and we should stop regulating it, another group saying that AI is too dangerous and we should stop it - and these groups even giving themselves names and logos. We can enable a more mature, informed debate). I'd love to see more people with more diverse backgrounds bringing perspective to this. And if you think you could be one of them, then this fellowship is a great opportunity to work out how you can influence policy at the highest level. There is a real case to be made that AI is possibly the most important development of our lifetimes, and that how we manage the next few years will be critical in determining whether it turns out to be good or harmful. To me this felt sufficiently important to take a break from chemical engineering, consulting and innovation, and focus on the AI transition. If you're tempted to do the same, it's definitely worth looking into this program. (Caveat: it's very competitive, only about 5% of applicants were accepted this time. But if you do apply, let me know and maybe I can put in a good word for you .. TBD if that would help or hinder your chances :D ) Also for interest, there is an outstanding training on AI Safety Governance offered by BlueDot (https://lnkd.in/e3N_XFfk) Applications for the next session close today (sorry, a bit late notice ... ), but there's another session with applications closing in June. I took that too and it was outstanding. Depending on how desperate they are this time, I may end up helping to teach this and/or one of the future sessions. So those of you who miss my P&G scale-up or fluids mixing trainings, this might be your chance :D
