I'm a Pioneer🚀
I'm part of the #ShePioneers Leadership program, backed by the Swedish Institute and run by the Embassy of #Sweden in Azerbaijan and Gender Hub Azerbaijan. We've just finished the main part of the program, which included sessions and workshop.
Our group is great. I get to meet women who work in management in both the #government and private sectors in Azerbaijan. It's a chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities women face in #leadership roles.
Here are some key takeaways I've learned:
1. Even if people around us have #biases, we often don't realize it and keep going.
2. What seems like #positivediscrimination is actually widespread in many companies.
3. The real issue isn't #gender, but the way we #think.
4. The training I've had has given me lots of skills that help me be active and social.
5. There's pressure for women to be perfect, and this idea is often criticized.
So I've learned that our brains and thoughts always need fresh ideas, new people, and different viewpoints.💡

Women Empowerment in Saudi Arabia: A New Era of Progress and Equality
In recent years, Saudi Arabia has witnessed remarkable advancements in women's empowerment. Once a country where restrictive social norms and legal constraints limited women's public roles, Saudi Arabia is now at the forefront of a transformative movement toward gender equality.
A Shift in Vision: Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030
The drive for women’s empowerment in Saudi Arabia is primarily fueled by Vision 2030, a strategic framework introduced in 2016 to diversify the economy and reduce its dependence on oil. Vision 2030 aims to create a more inclusive society and economy, with increased opportunities for women in various sectors. The plan recognizes the potential of Saudi women as critical to the nation's progress, emphasizing education, employment, and leadership roles.
Key Milestones in Women's Empowerment
Several landmark reforms have fundamentally reshaped the roles of women in Saudi society:
In June 2018, Saudi Arabia lifted the ban on women driving. This milestone symbolized freedom of movement and expanded economic opportunities, allowing women to participate more fully in the workforce and social life.
Women’s participation in the Saudi workforce has increased significantly, with female labor force participation jumping from about 20% in 2018 to over 30% in recent years. Women are now encouraged to pursue diverse fields, from law and engineering to aviation and finance. The government has introduced measures to support working women, including maternity leave policies, workplace harassment laws, and initiatives to encourage female entrepreneurship.
Saudi Arabia has made strides in empowering women to take on leadership roles. Women now hold seats on the Shura Council, Saudi Arabia's consultative assembly, and have been appointed to executive positions in corporations, government ministries, and even diplomatic roles.
Female entrepreneurship has flourished in recent years due to financial support, training programs, and relaxed restrictions on setting up businesses. The establishment of the Women’s Business Center by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) has enabled women to create startups and build enterprises, empowering them to contribute significantly to the national economy.
The journey toward gender equality in Saudi Arabia is a blend of governmental policy, social reform, and cultural evolution. Women are increasingly empowered to take control of their futures, and as this momentum continues, Saudi Arabia can serve as a model for women’s empowerment in the region.
In conclusion, women's empowerment in Saudi Arabia marks a significant chapter in the nation’s history. While challenges remain, the steps toward gender equality under Vision 2030 pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse society.

Laura, good to see you again on LinkedIn. Here is a pre-publish edition of my Women in Financial Services and those who follow me. They complement the conference notes.
When Life Imitates Art: Inspiration for Women in Finance
There’s a timeless saying that “Life imitates art,” and countless examples remind us how Art, in its many forms, resonates with our experiences and aspirations.
What comes to mind when you hear the expression, “Life imitates Art?” Is the ART the words written by a songwriter? Perhaps a scene in a movie. Or maybe the ART is Yo-Yo Ma’s music that transports you to another place, stirring something deeper within.
For women in financial advising and other professions, the journey involves challenges, moments of doubt, and a need for resilience. Art, through its power to move and inspire us, can offer a source of strength and reflection. Certain lines from movies, songs, or books can resonate deeply, often emerging in our minds just when we need them most. These moments of Art can remind us to aim higher, push through barriers, and believe in our own power.
Take, for instance, the famous line from A League of Their Own: “It’s supposed to be hard. If it weren’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” Spoken by Dottie Hinson, a character who represents grit and determination, this line highlights the strength it takes to thrive in a demanding field. Challenges are not only normal but are often what set the most dedicated among us apart.
Then there’s Mary Jackson’s courageous declaration in Hidden Figures: “I plan on being an engineer at NASA.” Here is a woman, facing barriers most would find insurmountable, affirming her right to dream and succeed. Her story reminds us to push boundaries and aspire to roles that may not traditionally be within reach—but with perseverance, become possible.
And from The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly’s line, “You have no idea how much I sacrifice,” speaks to the unseen dedication many women bring to their careers. Sacrifice, often unnoticed by others, is a quiet strength that allows for growth, success, and impact in our professional lives.
Let these words remind you that you’re not alone on your path. Embrace your ambition, lean into the hard moments, and let the Art you love serve as both a companion and guide. In your work as a financial advisor or other chosen field, remember, you have every right to reach for greatness.
As Jack Nicholson’s character famously says in As Good as It Gets, he tells Helen Hunt, “You make me want to be a better man.” It’s a tribute to the positive impact women have, inspiring others to grow and be their best. Allow this to be a reminder that your work, resilience, and dedication can inspire others—clients, colleagues, and perhaps even yourself—to new heights.

UN Women UK hosted an amazing learning event for the community. "From Learning to Action". The wonderful Atonte Semira yet again smashed it.
And heres why.
Despite the hundreds of people that attended, everyone had a voice. We shared our purpose, whats helps us or makes us resilient. What we look for in Leadership.
We talked about micro, mezzo and macro level engagement and where we could make change. The nuances within that and how having the knowledge will help us tackle systematic inequalities.
That transformational change - in our context is powerful.
That within that context our communities, individual goals and collective goals can address the challenges and drive positive change.
Recognising that even if we do not realise it - we are leaders.
Investing in our own learning and development is also important.
We just need to keep being Curious, Challenging and Considerate (not harming others, I don't mean making them a cup of tea 😉 ).

Happy Women's Day!
While I celebrate this special day, I want to discuss a strategy that might unintentionally hinder true empowerment.
In some cases (like the case of Ethiopia at Universities), projects should include women to be considered for the selection process.
These Policies requiring a minimum number of women on projects can feel performative.
However, does simply having a woman present truly give her a voice and leadership opportunity?
Counting numbers can be misleading. We want to see women driving initiatives, not just filling quotas!
In my opinion, we better focus on projects with women as Principal Investigators (PIs). This positions women to lead research, mentor others, and gain valuable experience. This prioritize projects where women's leadership is clear and impactful.
#womanempowerment
Ignoring it won’t fix it. #WeTheWomen can offer the fresh leadership perspectives the world needs.
The United Nations Office for Partnerships commissioned a survey of women from the United Nations worldwide network. A total of 25,854 responses from women in 185 countries were collected from 8 March through 26 April 2024.
The #survey reports that large numbers of women are aware of serious challenges facing their lives and their fellow citizens and expect that these challenges will become even more acute in the next decade.
But they are not pessimistic about the future.
They clearly identify pathways for leadership to meet these obstacles going forward and point the way for a greater role for women in global and local leadership.

One of the most striking findings of AlixPartners Disruption Index is that that female leaders see more opportunity in disruption than male leaders and see this as a catalyst for much-needed change.
How do we know this? This year, for the first time, we have examined the global findings of AlixPartners' annual Disruption Index through the lens of gender. Explore the findings in our latest report. https://lnkd.in/d--6ifTM#DisruptionInsights#Leadership#Transformation
