Back in 1968 the buying power of the minimum wage would be $14/hr ~JMb <>< #staywoke #RaiseTheWage As of 2022, 1.02 million hourly workers earned the federal minimum wage or less. That’s 1.3% of all hourly workers, the smallest percentage since data collection began in 1979. Since its establishment in 1938 at $0.25 an hour, Congress has increased the federal minimum wage 22 times, with the most recent increase to $7.25 occurring in July 2009. After adjusting for inflation, the federal minimum wage was highest in 1968, equating to $14.01 in 2023 dollars.

Minimum Wage Employees on a salary must still earn minimum wage for all hours worked. Current minimum wage is $23.15 and the current starting out and training wage is $18.52. Looking at minimum wage, if someone is working 37.5 hours (8.30 - 5pm with a one hour lunch break) they need to be being paid $43,142.50 per annum. If they work more than 37.5 hours in any one week and are on that salary (and paid weekly) they will be earning less than minimum wage. Employers are obligated to top up to minimum wage in these circumstances. #minimumwage #minimumstandards #employmentlaw

#Minimum_Wage The federal minimum wage is set at $7.25 per hour (as of 2023), but states may set higher rates. Employers are required to pay the higher of the federal or state minimum wage. Example: If an employee works 40 hours in a week and the minimum #wage is $7.25, the employee must be paid at least: $7.25 x 40 = $290 per week. In a state like California, where the state minimum wage is $15.50 (for large employers), the employee must be paid: $15.50 x 40 = $620 per week.

More information on how workers in Bangladesh do not have good information on what grade they belong to. Why does this matter? Because how much you get paid depends on your grade. If you don't know your grade you can easily be underpaid. Learn more at globalwd.org.
In November 2023, when the Minimum Wage Board increased the minimum wage, it also restructured the grading system, reducing the number of grades from seven to four. In our March 2024 Dialogue, we asked garment workers if they were aware of the changes in the grading system, and 80% of the workers we spoke to reported that they were aware. However, only 48% correctly identified that the new number of grades was now four. Discover the impact of these changes in our comprehensive report and interactive dashboard by visiting globalwd.org

Concerns About the New National Minimum Wage Recently, the government endorsed a national minimum wage of N$18 per hour, as proposed by the Ministry of Labour. While this initiative aims to ensure fair compensation for all workers, it raises some important questions about its practical implications. For instance, if someone is earning the minimum wage, which amounts to nearly N$3000 per month, how can they afford to employ a domestic worker? With the current minimum wage, would they also need to pay their domestic worker N$18 per hour? This scenario becomes even more complex when we consider security guards and other similar professions. If a security guard is paid N$18 per hour and wishes to hire a domestic worker, how much will they need to pay? Will they be required to pay the same minimum wage rate? It seems necessary to re-evaluate the minimum wage policy to address these concerns and ensure that it is fair and feasible for all parties involved. Your thoughts and opinions on this matter are valuable. How do you think the government should approach this issue? #MinimumWage #LabourLaws #DomesticWorkers #EconomicPolicy #FairWages
