I'm still so excited about last week's release of the Neurodiversity@Work Playbook: Federal Edition. I thought I'd post a favorite key takeaway from a different chapter each day this week. Today, I am starting with Chapter 2 (written by Hala Annabi, Tara Cunningham and Teresa Thomas). "While it is critical to learn from others’ experiences, no one size fits all for Neurodiversity@Work initiatives. Your initiative must be consistent with your agency’s strategy and values and must meet your agency’s needs." I love this reminder that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes the biggest barrier to launching these programs is the quest for perfection. There is no single right way to do this. Many employers start with one idea of the program, and then they pivot with time. If you are thinking about starting a neurodiversity at work program and would like to learn from Melwood's experience building inclusive workplaces for more than 60 years, then please reach out. As a paid consultant, articles like this are bad for business. So is a little book written by Steven D. Goldsein who asked the simple question "Why Are There Snowblowers In Miami?" The reality is, the best ideas and solutions for businesses can be derived from talking and listening to your employees.

We preach the gospel of self-organizing teams, but not everyone is on board with that view. A lot of managers and business people see the contemporary role of software developers as a set of perks—things to keep the troops happy. Deep down, they believe more typing is better. To them, self-organization is being inclusive and polite. They don't see it as the competitive advantage it truly is. It doesn't help that our vocabulary is coated in fluffy HR language. We're often told that these "perks" exist because a "happy worker is a productive worker." That's only true to an extent. We do a bad job of explaining the tangible benefits of self-organization. So, this week's edition of the Planned Attention newsletter attempts to explain why self-organizing teams are good for business.
