Dr Tom Kennie and myself have just released a HEPI report looking at the role of 'third space research professionals' in higher education. Drawing from our experiences working in and with universities and a number of specific projects we have been involved in we argue that this groups of people have a unique skill set - citizen science, laboratory technicians, impact, etc. - that do not fit into the narrow 'dualism' of academic vs professional staff in universities. This means that they are unseen by the system despite requiring specific career pathways and support. This is especially the case, we suggest, when it comes to transitions into and out of HE. Would be interested in feedback - good and critical! Report can be dowloaded from here: https://lnkd.in/eqTAatHK

The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) just released their 'one year on' update to their Researcher Mobility Taskforce report - documenting the myriad activity underway to promote researcher career mobility between academia and the wider economy. It's well worth a read (https://lnkd.in/eG66MxgE), and we're delighted to be included as a case study highlighting the sectorwide rollout of our Portal, our efforts to broaden postdoc career horizons, and our focus on bringing more employer voices from beyond academia into the mix. The report was launched via an excellent panel session including UK Research and Innovation's Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, Cranfield University's Karen Holford, and Arup Fellow Florence Lam. Some points from the discussion that really resonated with us and our work at Prosper: 💡 too often in the past the approach to talent in academia has had the 'traditional' academic career path embedded as an assumption, inadvertently corralling people into it – a better approach to truly creating diversity and unlocking the human capital is to recognise and embed a more broader, non-linear career landscape for researchers to inhabit and move around 💡 this integration and collaboration between academia and other sectors must be founded on a 'generosity of spirit' rather than a purely transactional frame, with the long-term understanding that a more porous landscape benefits all 💡 it's not just about getting academics into business/industry/other sectors, but also bringing employer voices into academia more (in part so that researchers can better understand the sheer range of options open to them, first-hand) 💡 The (good!) shift towards more collaboration, mobility, talent development has in turn created a new challenge in that it places extraordinary pressure on PIs, so we need to ensure they have the support they need to adapt to and embrace their bigger roles (this very much connects to our work with the PI Network and our recent wonkhe piece: https://lnkd.in/gdF8nSKb) 💡 there are practical considerations to do with risk, caring responsibilities etc. that inhibit career mobility in unproductive ways (e.g. short-term contracts vs permanent positions), more needs to be done on a structural level to 'de-risk' certain career movements to encourage sectoral integration at all career and life stages Much food for thought! Many thanks to our friends at The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) for pulling together such a great panel, and for the wider work they're doing on this vital issue (as well as our friends at Developing Business-Aware Academics, whose work is also featured in the report).
Today we share our new report highlighting how mobility between academia & industry can drive innovation and strengthen the UK’s research workforce. We need to unlock new opportunities for researchers to move fluidly across sectors. Read more: https://bit.ly/ncubmtf #ResearchMobility #Innovation
