"𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬... A new strategy, a paradigm shift is a quite positive stance. But we need urgent measures that truly make the pointers move concerning more houses that the Portuguese nationals can afford! Before the new housing strategy – "Construir Portugal" – announced by the Government I notice a paradigm shift in the approach to the housing problem in Portugal. We shifted from an demand centered analysis to focus on the supply. And, as I have been saying, the problem mainly lies in the supply, therefore I believe that the perspective of this new strategy is most suitable". --- As in the U.S., Canadian communities are facing a shortage of affordable housing. The response is being directed in part by programs funded by the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada, an agency at the federal level, working with provincial, local, and private development partners. It makes sense to approach affordable housing and infrastructure funding on a national scale, to provide coordination and incentives designed to move new developments closer to construction and completion. Yet it will take years of construction in communities coast to coast to meet the needs. Progress being made in Montreal neighborhoods: https://lnkd.in/gH8zHRyK

Fantastic friday afternoon conversation on the NPPF organised by the Eastern Powerhouse and graciously hosted by Carter Jonas in Cambridge. An engaging discussion on how the Eastern Powerhouse should respond to the consultation on the current proposed changes with representatives from across the industry. My 3 clear takeaways were; 1. It is clear that changes to planning are one part of the solution to “getting Britain building again” but alone will not be effective 2. The need for strategic regional planning is needed if we are to deliver anywhere near the governments housing targets and this in turn requires joined up thinking across regions and local authority boundaries to secure the investment in infrastructure required to support growth 3. Government fixation on delivery of a %age of affordable housing is counter productive to delivery, what is far more important is that we deliver more housing supported by investment in job creation and infrastucture in locations where that housing is built. The more supply we create, the more affordable housing will ultimately become for all. Thanks Steven Lynch MBE for the invite

Inclusionary Zoning? Transit-Oriented Market Housing? Pre-Zoning? Density Bonus? Vacancy Chains? Housing demand? If these concepts get you excited, then please consider contributing an article to the next edition of Plan Canada.
📣 The Winter 2024 issue of Plan Canada aims to share critical perspectives on current efforts to expand the housing supply in urban, suburban, and rural communities. Topics of interest include: 📌 First Nations efforts to expand housing supply for their members and neighbours 📌 Trade-offs, real or perceived, between housing supply efforts with other important policy objectives 📌 Private sector delivery of housing and associated challenges, including housing that meets the needs of residents versus the needs of market investors Find out more and submit an article today: https://lnkd.in/dRfYf2Vn

😊 Amusing content ::: I have been known to get frustrated with government and organizations that manage budgets in our province and local region for soooo many reasons. One of these reasons is the way we have dealt with urban planning, infrastructure and affordable housing. (UNFILTERED CONTENT BELOW) I was able to sit in on a Housing Summit RESCON in October in ON and no one sums up the facts, in the most amusing way, better than Marlon Bray from Altus (@ 1:13:13) regarding the current state of the housing crisis in Canada and shortage of resources. Eye-opening on how bad the problem is in Canada and how we need the public and private sector to come together more than ever! (Best straightforward content in years 😆) https://lnkd.in/ezgxyuvp #housingcrisis #altus #publicandprivatesector #bromemissisquoi

In its National Planning and Policy Framework consultation response, the Local Government Association amplified its call for national support to help councils deliver affordable, quality homes, urging the UK Government to strengthen local resources, streamline infrastructure funding, and expand council powers to set planning fees. Propertymark supports a balanced approach to housing policy, where local expertise is harnessed to deliver homes, that communities need. 🏘️ **PROGRAMME FOR THE EU: Opinion from the Committee of the Regions** On April 17, during its plenary session, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) adopted an opinion calling for the launch of a housing program for the EU. This opinion aims to better coordinate housing and transportation policies, strengthen financial support for social, private, cooperative, and public housing initiatives, and increase the renovation rate of residential buildings. Local and regional authorities also seek increased support to protect urban centers from excessive "touristification," thereby preserving the quality of life in neighborhoods. Europe is facing a housing crisis, with rising rents and real estate prices, and local authorities play a crucial role in providing affordable housing and managing public spaces. 🔗 [Link to the opinion](https://lnkd.in/e6aHZM7U) #EUHousing #LocalAuthorities #HousingCrisis #CommitteeOfTheRegions 🌍🏠
