REMINDER For action - PLEASE SIGN to SAVE NATIONAL PARKS - Queensland Parliamentary petition This is a reminder to sign the Queensland parliamentary petition (link below) to save Queensland’s national parks from commercialisation (eg leases). An explanation follows: ASH has no objection to the present permitting system, permits being approved on an annual basis. In contrast, leases granted for commercial use of all or part of a national park, whether long-term or VERY long-term (eg70 years) are just plain wrong. Leasing a state asset is equivalent to selling its use rights; and every political party says so - when in Opposition! “Commercialisation” via leasing of national parks must stop. The land acquired for national parks is a public good. It must not be gifted to private developers. https://lnkd.in/gcExHURT. With warm regards to all defenders of Queensland’s national parks. ℹ️ ICYMI - Bill 35 which threatens Alberta's Parks is going to its third reading in the #Alberta legislature this Wednesday, December 4. We and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society - Southern Alberta have concerns about the Bill. The "All-Season Resorts Act" would give unprecedented power to the Ministry of Tourism and Sport. If passed, Bill 35 would expose #parks, protected areas, and public land – beloved by Albertans and crucial to biodiversity #conservation and ecological integrity – to the development of year-round privatized resorts. The proposed Act also flies in the face of recent public polling, and the Government of Alberta’s own Plan for Parks survey results, which overwhelmingly highlighted support for increased protected areas, low-impact recreation, and opposed large-scale commercial development in Alberta’s parks. Upon CPAWS alerting the public about the Bill’s upcoming third reading, over 925 Albertans have already voiced their opposition to the All-Season Resorts Act. ⚠️ Full Release Below ⚠️

"The numbers come from a petition against the £40 million proposals – which include more than 100 holiday lodges, a hotel, waterpark, and monorail – being run by the Scottish Greens. On Tuesday morning, there were some 97,000 signatories to the petition. However, that has skyrocketed by more than 26,000 after the date for a decision on the Flamingo Land application was set for September 16." #environment #sustainable #developmentopportunity #glasgow #aberdeen #galloway #propertydevelopment #climatechange #environmentprotection #riverside #lowcarbonfuture #farminguk #ayr #businessbounceback #highlands #preservation #environmentprotectionlaw #environmentaljustice #Scotland #nicolasturgeon #SackNicolaSturgeon #ianblackford #SNP #government #humzayousaf #publicopinion #trustworthiness #publictrust #tourism #touristattractions #cityscapes #citycentre #marketing #lochlomond #flamingoland #petition #consent #planningapplication #townplanning #projectmanagement #townandcountry https://lnkd.in/epDdrtWQ

🤓 Urban Legal Friday Fact 🤓 Did you know that the National Heritage List protects places of outstanding heritage significance to Australia? From natural wonders to historic landmarks, this list ensures the preservation of sites that tell the story of our nation. In NSW, we’re proud to have some incredible places on the list, including: 🏛️ The Sydney Opera House – a global architectural icon. 🌊 The Great Barrier Reef (shared with QLD) – a natural wonder that begins off our coastline. 🛤️ The Australian Convict Sites – several of which are in NSW, such as Hyde Park Barracks and the Old Government House. These sites are protected under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the additional approval requirements under that act. Any action likely to have a significant impact on the heritage values of these places must be referred to the Minister for the Environment. This process is completely separate from any approvals required in NSW. Even with local development consent, Federal approval is mandatory for significant impacts. #UrbanLegal #HeritageMatters #PlanningLaw #NationalHeritageList #FridayFact #AustraliaHeritage #NSWHeritage #PreservingHistory

*Personal opinion* A public consultation has opened for the eagerly awaited proposed new National Park which includes the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley. This (in my personal opinion) would be a great idea to put the spotlight on the importance of this area in North-East Wales. However, I do wonder how this will be funded considering for instance the SNPA and NRW are struggling financially (as reported in the press with for e.g. Plas Tan y Bwlch up for sale), and CADW provide only very limited funding for Listed Buildings and conservation work - how will this new National Park be successful without funding? And where would that funding come from? 🤔

Public Realm Enhancement | The Grand Canal We are partnering with Waterways Ireland to upgrade the public #amenities along the Grand Canal between Leeson Street and Baggot Street bridges. The improvements will include increasing pedestrian accessibility and enhancing public seating. Enhancements to #biodiversity include improving habitats for wildlife, additional native planting schemes, and protection for existing trees so they can continue to thrive. Our Chief Executive, Niall Gaffney said: “Following on from our restoration of the nearby Wilton Park, we are proud to work with Waterways Ireland to upgrade the banks of Dublin’s Grand Canal, providing enhanced amenities for residents, our occupiers, and visitors to the area. 🎉Every step in the right direction has to be celebrated. 🎉This week brought fantastic news for #marineconservation efforts in Ireland and Europe. With new financing secured for Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and the passing of the Nature Restoration Law, we're paving the way for a healthier #ocean ecosystem. 🌊 💶Ireland has secured €15.14million towards developing its network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Irish waters as part of the European Commission LIFE Funding Program. Match funding of €10million will be provided by the Irish Government.🌎 💶This new funding is a great step in the right direction. A huge congratulations to all the team at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and partners at University of Galway, University College Dublin and University College Cork for securing this funding. European Funding is not for the faint-hearted, it requires huge dedication and diligence to secure. Last year Fair Seas published the first Sustainable Finance Report in Europe highlighting that Ireland needed to secure €55million to implement effective Marine Protected Areas. We're nearly halfway to our target of €55 million, thanks to this new funding. 🎯 This good news story in Ireland came just before the Nature Restoration Bill was passed in the EU this week. This bill aims to restore 20% of EU land and 20% of EU seas by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. This new European legislation coupled with our soon-to-be finalised national MPA legislation gives us hope for a brighter future for our ocean. 🌊 #FairSeas #30x30Ireland #RestoreNature P.S. The mini explorations continue down under, this photo was taken on the Gold Coast, exploring the sand and surf on Surfers Paradise Beach. The water was a balmy 26c and the surf was lively. This long stretch of beach is beautiful, it appears to go on forever with over 57km of beach and more than 40 Lifeguard stations. Very different and a bit colder than our usual West Cork beaches. 🙃

#Walesplan24 #RTPICymru Wales Planning Conference breakout sessions covered wide-ranging topics in the hope of providing something of interest to everyone. Jonathan Cawley led a session on sustainable tourism, which considered the car-use impacts of tourism on Eryri National Park and ways of addressing the local impact vs the risks of deterring visitors who opt for foreign holidays with a worse carbon footprint and no local economic benefit. Improved rail park and ride offers one opportunity. #FrancisTaylorBuilding provided a valuable update on relevant case law, including Finch, a ruling that emerged this morning. I'm always in awe of the brain capacity of barristers to absorb brand new information. Lindsay Christian and Amy Longford led a discussion on decarbonising Wales' 30000 Listed Buildings and other heritage buildings, recognising the importance of keeping buildings in use to preserve heritage assets. "There's always something you CAN do". And linking back to housing delivery, how can we align reuse of town centre heritage buildings for affordable housing with flexibility regarding WHQS to access funding. Nick Bennett and Rebecca Williams spoke about the economic benefits of decarbonisation in terms of direct and indirect job creation and investment.

No more building permits in Florida Keys ... Title: The Florida Keys: Development Freeze or New Opportunity? Body The Florida Keys, a chain of idyllic islands known for its coral reefs and laid-back charm, faces a unique situation. A 1972 law limiting building permits reached its cap in 2023, effectively pausing new construction. This has sparked debate. Some see it as a win for conservation, protecting the delicate ecosystem and preventing overcrowding. Others worry about stifled growth and economic impacts on the Keys' communities. What are your thoughts? **Is a complete halt on development necessary to preserve the Keys' natural beauty? **Are there alternative solutions for sustainable growth and economic development? **How can we ensure a vibrant future for the Keys while protecting its environment? #FloridaKeys #development #environment #sustainability #construction
