We’re coming to the end of 2024 and we’re looking at what we’ve done this year! 🎉 Our project consortium met with the Project Officer from CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency to discuss the progress made by the UP-TO-ME project during the first 18 months. This gave the consortium the opportunity to present to the Project Officer what we have achieved in the project so far and what the next steps are to reach the project objectives🚀. We are proud to say we passed this mid-term evaluation of the project, and we are well on the way to achieving our project objectives! 💪. The Arctic Five is a new UArctic Regional Centre The Arctic Five has officially been established as a UArctic Regional Centre to enhance academic and research endeavours in the Fennoscandianavian Arctic. A Memorandum of understanding between the two organisations was signed by Dag Avango, director of The Arctic Five and Lars Kullerud, president of UArctic during the UArctic Assembly meeting 2024 in Bodø. The Arctic Five is a partnership between UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Luleå University of Technology, Umeå University, The University of Lapland and The University of Oulu. It aims to lead the way in Arctic issues. Together the five universities form an alliance that will advance and share knowledge, education and innovations for the development of the region and a sustainable Arctic. This consortium represents the most extensive research and education infrastructure in the European Arctic, encompassing over 10,000 researchers and 90,000 students. UArctic, an association legally constituted in Finland, functions as a network of universities, colleges, and research institutes focused on education and research pertinent to the North. “By also establishing The Arctive Five as a UArctic regional centre, we will strengthen our network and outreach in the Fennoscandiavian Arctic, thus developing the research and educational endeavours in the region”, says Dag Avango. The Memorandum of understanding outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration emphasising mutual support, resource sharing, and the facilitation of activities that meet the objectives of both The Arctic Five and UArctic. This establishment not only reinforces the Arctic Five’s role in the region but also aligns with UArctic’s mission to build and strengthen collective resources and infrastructures. It is a strategic step towards a more integrated and effective approach to Arctic education and research, benefiting both the academic community and the broader Arctic region. “By becoming a regional centre or UArctic we will reinforce our international network. We, in turn, can contribute to UArctic with our strong relationship to the European Union”, says Dag Avango. Photo: Dag Avango and Lars Kullerud signing the Memorandum. 🆕📚 Excited to share that our latest article "A spatial decision support system for multi-dimensional sustainability assessment of river basin districts: the case study of Sarno river, Italy" is now published in #LandUsePolicy journal! 🔗 You can access the full-text article here: https://lnkd.in/esjf3e3C 🔍 In this research, we introduce an indicators-based and site-specific #SpatialDecisionSupportSystem tailored for assessing suitable scenarios to foster collaborative and multi-level governance of a River Basin District. The main goal was to evaluate sustainability scenarios based on the multi-dimensional performances of River Basin District Units, focusing on the case study of the Sarno river basin and its 20 municipalities, in Southern Italy. 🎯 Our approach aims to support decision-makers in taking a step forward in #RiverBasinManagement by integrating environmental criteria with social, cultural, and economic ones in a spatial GIS-MCDA platform, allowing the identification of areas of concern. The results delivered partial and overall rankings of RBDU for an integrated sustainability scenario. The outcome is twofold: to provide recommendations for supporting governance models based on sustainability pathways and to suggest valuable methods and tools to deal with spatial misfits. 🔬 This work represents a further advancement in the research field of SDSSs, in which we keep experimenting with the integration of #MultiCriteriaDecisionAnalysis and #GIS to propose new evaluation approaches and tools for a more informed decision-making. 🙌 My heartfelt gratitude for this achievement extends to my fellow co-authors - Giuliano Poli, Stefano Cuntò and maria cerreta - for their outstanding contribution. 💬 We invite fellow researchers, practitioners and enthusiasts to check our work and share their thoughts with us! #SDSS #RiverBasinManagement #NewArticle #Research #Sustainability #Assessment #SpatialMisfits #MCDA #PhDLife Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II

199 projects have applied for funding in the first round of NordForsk's call on Sustainable Development of the Arctic. 36 of them, representing 18 per cent of the applications, have now been invited to the second round. Kristin Andersen is Special Advisor at NordForsk and responsible for the Arctic call. She says: “We are very pleased to see so many applications and that as many as nine countries are represented from across the Nordic region, Canada and America. This shows the great relevance of the theme for the entire Arctic region. We also see that there is great breadth in the themes addressed by the applications.” The research area is a collaborative effort between Norges forskningsråd, Research Council of Finland | Suomen Akatemia, Independent Research Fund Denmark, Research Council Faroe Islands, Vetenskapsrådet / Swedish Research Council and Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, Greenland Research Council, Rannís - The Icelandic Centre for Researchwith funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation - Iceland, National Science Foundation (NSF), Canada Research Coordinating Committee, and NordForsk.
