The regulatory landscape for non-nutritive sweeteners is rapidly evolving, with significant recent developments in both the EU and UK. In October 2024, the EU declared monk fruit decoctions (Siraitia grosvenorii) as ‘not novel’, mirroring a similar decision by the UK in June 2024. Consequently, monk fruit decoctions can now be used as an ingredient in food and beverage products sold in these jurisdictions. This shift opens up new opportunities to food and beverage manufacturers wanting to replace sugars/added sugars in a wide range of formulations. There is a legal loophole that allows American food companies to determine what is ‘safe’ for them to add into your food supply: - The FDA is supposed to oversee the safety of the U.S. food supply. - However, since 1997, the FDA has allowed the food industry to independently determine which new ingredients as ‘generally recognised as safe’. - The food companies aren’t even required (though are advised) to disclose the new use of ingredients and their safety data to the FDA or the public. - Only if later research suggests harm, will the FDA review the situation and take action – after it has been in the food supply… - Records show there have only been 15 compounds that have had their GRAS status revoked, despite thousands of additions to the foods supply. This seems potentially disproportionate... - The FDA does also not regularly review foods with ingredients that can be ‘safe’ at low levels, but not in large amounts, like caffeine, salt and sugar. - This lack of regulation and reviewing of foods is a worrying situation in need of change. https://lnkd.in/e9DfmbJe

The FDA is prioritizing food safety by revoking the regulation permitting brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food due to potential health risks. Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) is a vegetable oil modified with bromine, used in small amounts (up to 15 parts per million) as a stabilizer in beverages to prevent citrus flavoring from separating. BVO had to be listed on labels as "brominated vegetable oil" or the specific type of brominated oil. Over time, many beverage makers have replaced BVO with alternative ingredients, resulting in few U.S. beverages currently containing BVO. This significant decision comes after studies highlighting concerns about BVO, a food additive used since 1970 to prevent separation in citrus-flavored beverages. Companies have until August 2, 2024, to comply with the new regulations, emphasizing a dedication to ensuring the safety of food ingredients. #FDA #FoodSafety #BVO #HealthRisks
