Close Health Gap: A $1T Opportunity Despite women living longer than men, they spend 25% more of their lives struggling with health problems - an average of nine years. A startling revelation was the economic potential of addressing this gap. It could add a staggering $1 trillion to the global economy by 2040. This isn't simply a numerical figure; it represents an opportunity to transform lives and make a massive societal contribution. Now, more than ever, we must put women's health at the forefront. The need for increased funding, extensive research, and significant policy changes is evident. Improving women's health isn't merely about women; it's about our society's overall well-being. Level up, world! Investing in women’s health isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a win-win for everyone. A recent article by the World Economic Forum shows that when women are healthy, it benefits individuals, families, communities, organizations, and even the global economy. • Reducing the women’s health gap improves lives and can potentially unlock a $ 1 trillion GDP opportunity annually by 2040! • While women live longer than men, they spend 25% more of their lives in poorer health, grappling with a higher share of debilitating conditions. • Women often confront barriers, stigma and bias in healthcare systems designed and managed by men, leading to a lower likelihood of receiving equal interventions for a given disease. So, how can we tackle this? • Health stakeholders should systematically collect and analyse sex-, ethnicity- and gender-specific data for a more accurate representation of the women’s health burden and the impact of interventions. • In all organisations, leaders can establish business policies that support women’s health at work. As we near International Women's Day on Friday, a new report confirms why tackling the disparities in men and women's healthcare is not only good for women but also the economy. The report addresses the root causes of the women’s health gap (focused on science, data, care delivery and investment) and charts a number of ways forward to close this gap – from incentivizing new financing models to investing in women-centric research and implementing more inclusive health policies. Addressing the women’s health gap could potentially boost the global economy by at least $1 trillion annually by 2040. Investing in women's health – which is more than just sexual or reproductive health – is therefore not only a matter of health equity, but a chance to help women have expanded workforce participation. Most importantly, it would help them live healthier lives. https://lnkd.in/dBtmfDmq

"Despite living longer than men, women, on average, spend 25% more of their lives in poor health. Much of this disparity can be attributed to the way science and healthcare have, for much of history, treated women as though they are small men. They are not." Building on the McKinsey Health Institute’s report in collaboration with the World Economic Forum earlier this year, MHI's Lucy Perez and Megan Greenfield, Ph.D. explore the causes of, and actions needed to close the women's health gap in Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative’s Social Impact Review.
