#ITPR is thrilled to partner with the Consulate General of Belgium in Hong Kong to foster creativity and cultural exchange within the film community. Last week, we showcased two exceptional short films by our talented student filmmakers, Miss Chan Wing Ki and Mr Wong King Chau, during a special movie screening event as part of Belgian Days 2024. Miss Chan’s film, “Game Rule,” explores a school prefect's struggle with the rigidity of rules as she confronts the police enforcing her grandmother's illegal street vending. This film won the 2024 Pingyao Corner "Best Student Short Film." Mr Wong’s film, “Evil,” delves into the psyche of a criminologist grappling with his declining mental state while investigating the mysterious disappearance of a former classmate. The event also featured films from students of Institut Supérieur des Arts (#INSAS) and included an insightful fireside chat moderated by Mr Wong Sau Ping Adam, Associate Professor of Practice at #HKBU Academy of Film, with contributions from Ms Chan and Ms Jialai Wang of INSAS. We are proud to witness the creativity and storytelling mastery of HKBU students, contributing to a vibrant and dynamic film community. #HongKongBaptistUniversity #HKBUAcademyOfFilm #HKBUAF #AF #BelgianDays #StudentFilmScreening #FutureDirectors #CinematicStorytelling #FilmSchools #BrusselsMeetsHongKong #ShortFilms #EmergingTalent #FilmFestival #MeetTheFilmmakers #CinemaInnovation #Moviescreenings #Eastmeetswest #Culturalexchange Connect with us ITPR - Institute for Innovation, Translation and Policy Research @HKBU

#DCIMCapstone As I approach the end of my senior year, I am working on my capstone project, the culmination of my DCIM (Digital Communication Information & Media) minor. My fascination with media began in middle school when I witnessed how media platforms could bring people together creating communities and friendships. Media has spotlighted much of Korean culture through music, dramas, and cinema. As a Korean-American, I felt a mix of pride and frustration seeing South Korea represented primarily through these pop culture lenses, reinforcing certain stereotypes. Then, groundbreaking works like Parasite and Squid Game emerged. Initially, it was a simple interest in how Korean cinema impacted the West, particularly the United States. I wondered what made Parasite so special and how it became the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture at the Oscars. I’ve since realized that Korean cinema delves deeper than mere entertainment; it’s designed and formed to deliver a gut punch and resonate on a global scale. It has its own accent of speaking about the country’s trauma. This article explores the thoughts of various Korean actors and filmmakers in this new wave of Korean cinema. Director Lee Isaac Chung of Minari expressed amazement at the film’s wide-reaching impact, a feeling that Director Bong Joon Ho also once shared. Many believe that the Korean wave is a healing force, playing a significant role in the South Korean people redefining their imagery of their existence. Films challenge us to question human existence while connecting us globally. They subtly remind us that despite our differences, we share common ground. Through the cinematic experience, we confront the notion that the world and the cinematic realm are not separate. I’m excited to be sharing the process with you, highlighting the importance of Korean cinema and its ability to connect us all.
