Should the Albanian diaspora vote?
Although this topic is complex, numerous arguments are in favor of allowing citizens abroad to participate in their home country's elections. Indeed, there are several reasons as to why the diaspora should have the right to vote.
First and foremost, voting is and remains a fundamental democratic right. Irrespective of one's place of residence, denying this right based on location undermines the principles of democracy and equality. Secondly, while living abroad we are still affected by the governance of our home country. Albanians should have a say in electing leaders who may impact their rights, property, family, and future opportunities. More so, communities abroad very often contribute to the country's GDP through remittances, but also through other investments. In return, voting rights honor their economic involvement. As investors, they have a vested interest in the political stability that can affect their investments. Also, allowing the diaspora to vote helps maintain their connection to their homeland, even more considering that 1/3 of the country's population has migrated in the last decade. In that spirit, the diaspora engages in various cultural and social initiatives that benefit Albania.
Nation-building efforts are fostered when active participation of citizens is granted, and that can also be done through voting rights. Not to mention the diverse perspectives and experiences that diaspora brings in political discourse. Last, but not least, the legitimacy of elections is also granted by including the diaspora in the electoral process by ensuring that the government represents all its citizens, within or outside its borders. This becomes a necessity when the number of Albanians living outside outweighs those living in Albania.
Joseph Nye the American would agree that a politically engaged diaspora can enhance a country's soft power. Let us not forget those Albanian diaspora communities who often act as informal ambassadors promoting the home country's interests and image abroad.

🌍 Truly inspiring to witness the incredible turnout of South Africans living and working abroad who are eager to make their voices heard in this year's elections. Over 78 000 have registered to vote from outside our country, a remarkable surge in participation!
Back in the 2019 elections, only 29 468 registered to vote from abroad, and just 19 909 cast their ballots. This year's numbers are a testament to the growing commitment of our fellow citizens to shape the future of our nation.
Let's hope for equally impressive turnouts within South Africa's own borders on May 29th! Together, we make democracy work. ❎
💡 Interesting fact: The largest voting station for South Africa's elections, in terms of the number of registered voters, isn't actually in South Africa but rather in the UK. South Africa House in Trafalgar Square, London, has 24,535 registered voters, making it the polling station with the largest number of voters in South Africa's elections.
With the European Elections coming up soon it's interesting to see the minimum age to stand as a candidate is different around the member states - ranging from 18-25.
My thoughts are - ability and effective delivery for the common good are more important than age, with a caveat of practicality in relation to being able to perform the job (e.g. travel, safety, education etc). What are your thoughts?
Most importantly, don't forget to vote if you have a vote!

How young can you be to stand as a candidate in the European elections?
Check out this map to see the minimum age required in order to campaign to become a member of the next European Parliament.
The minimum age across most EU countries is as low as 18 years old, but it can be as high as 25 years old as observed in Greece and Italy.
