There was never a more important topic than freedom of speech and freedom of expression whilst still assuring each and every one of us has security in todays precarious world. The right level of accessabilty to knowledge, information and learning ( data, information, insights) is the means to ensure that diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging neutralise the narcissistic excesses of man’s lust for power, status and authority. 🤔🤔🙏🙏 #LoveAndPeace #InformationTechnology #Information #AgriculturalRevolution #IndustrialRevolution #InformationRevolution “SLAPPs represent an abuse of our legal system,” the justice minister Heidi Alexander told MPs yesterday. “They curtail free speech, have a chilling effect on public interest journalism and pose a threat to our democracy.” “There will always be legitimate defamation claims,” the minister said, “and any intervention must be proportionate and targeted appropriately.” “ I am clear that this is a complex area and we should not legislate in haste, only to find ourselves with unworkable legislation with unintended consequences. We do not currently intend to legislate in this parliamentary session but we are continuing our work to consider how best to tackle wider abuses of the system in the longer term…” “Our immediate focus, therefore, will be on the implementation of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act provisions. Our future approach to SLAPPs reform will be informed by monitoring the operation of the new procedural rules when they come in…” “It is important that we listen closely to the differing views on this topic and that any action we take is proportionate. That involves considering a range of options for longer-term reform that accounts for the diversity of views expressed by stakeholders and those targeted by these abhorrent actions.”
“SLAPPs represent an abuse of our legal system,” the justice minister Heidi Alexander told MPs yesterday. But they are not to be slapped down yet.

So important to understand the human impact of unethical legal practice - and who better to help make that clear than Lee Castleton. The first thing he said to this collection of legal stakeholders was a personal exhortation to never let poor practice go unchallenged wherever any of us see it. As he says - none of us should rely on a regulator to stamp out unethical behaviour - we must all stand up and seek to stamp it out ourselves. (Not that that in any way reduces the responsibilities of regulators to play their part too…) #reshapinglegalservices

AB 3252, Berman. Shorthand court reporters: sunset: certification. • Existing law entitles a person to obtain a certificate as a certified shorthand reporter if certain requirements are met, including passing a specified exam." • This bill requires the California state licensing examination to consist of three divisible parts, including English, Professional Practice, and Dictation/Transcription (Machine/Skill)... • The bill would require an applicant to take and pass all three parts of the examination within 3 consecutive years and authorize an applicant to repeat any part of the examination... • Existing law states that a natural person holding a valid certificate as a shorthand reporter is known as a 'certified shorthand reporter.' • This bill would add the phrase 'voice writer' to the above-described list of words and phrases. If a reporter states a license number not within these ranges, they are most likely not a California-certified stenographic reporter. You may also look up the number by typing in their license numbers here: https://lnkd.in/gZpFPSGq #courtreporting #shorthandreporter #certifiedshorthandreporter #courtreporterslife #legalsupportservices #lawyers #attorneys #litigators #lawfirms #parallegals #iDepo #newsupdate #legalupdate #courtreportingupdate #courtreportingnewbill #certifiedshorthandreporter

EVERYTHING SECRET DEGENERATES: THE FBI’S USE OF MURDERERS AS INFORMANTS Federal law enforcement officials made a decision to use murderers as informants beginning in the 1960s. Known killers were protected from the consequences of their crimes and purposefully kept on the streets. This report discusses some of the disastrous consequences of the use of murderers as informants in New England. Beginning in the mid-1960s, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI” or “Bureau”) began a course of conduct in New England that must be considered one of the greatest failures in the history of federal law enforcement. This Committee report focuses on only a small segment of what happened. It discusses primarily the 1965 murder of Edward “Teddy” Deegan, the subsequent prosecution of six defendants for that murder, and the actions of federal law enforcement officials to protect cooperating witness Joseph “The Animal” Barboza and government informants Jimmy “The Bear” Flemmi and Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi....
