In the transition to #zeroemission vehicles and #netzero transport, one of the primary considerations is the carbon intensity of the fuel/energy used, and the efficiency of both the production and distribution of that fuel and its use in a vehicle. #Battery electric vehicles currently dominate the zero emissions market and many studies have been conducted to assess the #carbon intensity trajectory of #electricity and its transmission, and on electric vehicle efficiency. The other clear zero emissions option is #hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles but there is very little agreed data on either the pathways for low carbon hydrogen supply or on the vehicle efficiency of FCEV. Specifically in the UK there is no GHG reporting data for companies using hydrogen vehicles. With the increase in hydrogen vehicles, particularly in bus and truck applications #Zemo identified several areas which warranted building an evidence base to improve understanding of the role of hydrogen in zero emission transport and to fill key gaps in transport sector’s knowledge. The objectives of the low carbon hydrogen pathway study focused on: ⚡• Providing a transparent and up to date analysis of the WTT GHG emissions and energy use for a range of low carbon hydrogen supply chains ⚡• Accounting for fugitive hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane emissions ⚡• Identifying the key sensitivities influencing carbon intensity and energy use ⚡• Creating an in-house WTT low carbon hydrogen pathways model for ongoing Zemo use Celine Cluzel Silvian Baltac Zemo Partnership 👇👇👇 Follow Africa Hydrogen Hub (AHH) for more updates. #zeroemissions #greenhydrogen #electricvehicles

🤔 Could Hydrogen rail be deployed in the East Midlands sooner than we think? After attending the "HyDEX - Hydrogen Rail in the Midlands" report launch hosted at the historic Alstom manufacturing site this morning my mind is simply abuzz with questions, ideas and simple excitement for the scale of the opportunity in the East Midlands region. The report highlights the readiness of the region for pilot studies of hydrogen rail. Not only is there sufficient hydrogen supply and infrastructure to begin testing but also, a massive economic benefit in deploying hydrogen rail in comparison to electrification for specific routes. To be clear, hydrogen rail has been demonstrated to be safe and effective but commercial, passenger train pilot studies must be carried out before a larger deployment is possible. In order to make this economically feasible OEMs require orders of scale which then requires significant investment and usually government policy to really drive this transformation. Each stakeholder is then waiting for one another to make the first move despite the fact that our region already has the UK's largest green hydrogen production and refuelling facility producing ONE TONNE of hydrogen a DAY! Tyseley Energy Park A really insightful panel discussion also underscored the importance of public education, skills and training for the future hydrogen economy workforce and my personal favourite: discerning the right technologies for the right areas to facilitate effective sustainable transformation. There is no ONE "correct" answer to the energy problem, there will be many collaborative solutions. Please check out the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e3aG6Qf2 ❗ Note: The launch of the East Midlands Combined County Authority will be a crucial step in realising this vision - don't forget to vote for the East Midlands Mayor on 02/05/2024! And if you've made it this far you probably care about hydrogen rail and sustainability enough that you must go and engage with some of the incredible people and businesses working really hard to make this a reality: Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) East Midlands Hydrogen H2 Green #greenhydrogen #hydrogenrail #sustainability #renewableenergy #EastMidlands #greenenergy #decarbonisation #netzero #transport

A hydrogen-powered ferry that lets you drink its emissions First hydrogen fuel-powered ferry in the United States begins commercial service in San Francisco San Francisco is now home to the first hydrogen-powered passenger vessel in the United States, following its launch by San Francisco Bay, and the vessel’s emissions are so clean, you can drink them. Called Sea Change, the 75-passenger catamaran ferry has an integrated hydrogen power system with 360 kW of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells,100 kWh of li-Ion battery storage, and 600 kW of electric motor propulsion. Fuelled by compressed hydrogen, the zero-emissions ferry has a top speed of 15 knots, and a service speed of between 8 and 12 knots. The system was supplied by Zero Emission Industries (ZEI). San Francisco Bay Ferry and a group of private and public sector partners launched Sea Change, which will begin offering free transport between Pier 41 and the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal beginning 19 July. The ferry will operate in the San Francisco Bay Ferry network for a six-month demonstration period designed to showcase the application of fuel-cell technology as a viable strategy for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving air quality. How clean are Sea Change’s emissions? The ferry emits only water vapour, part of which is remineralised and used in the onboard water fountain, making it the only vessel in the world with drinkable emissions. Owned by SWITCH Maritime LLC, Sea Change was developed by the company with support from a grant provided by the California Air Resources Board. The demonstration service is made possible thanks to sponsorships from a group of partners including Chevron New Energies; the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, and United Airlines. The service will be operated by San Blue & Gold Fleet. “Sea Change is a real-world, practical example of how the government and private sector can work together to help demonstrate the commercial viability and increase consumer confidence in hydrogen,” said Chevron New Energies, vice president, hydrogen, Austin Knight. “This is not just the start of service for Sea Change, but hopefully also the start of much more active investment in the energy transition of the maritime industry in California and beyond,” said SWITCH Maritime chief executive Pace Ralli. Riviera’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference 2024 will be held in Bergen, Norway, 29-31 October 2024.
