If you're looking for jobs... You should spend as much time on job boards as you do buying lottery tickets. They all seem great with millions of jobs posted every day. Maybe you'll get lucky and get an interview, and maybe even a job offer. Maybe, you'll also hit on your lottery ticket too. If you're going to apply to jobs either hope to get lucky or plan on applying to hundreds and hundreds of jobs. If you just don't want to put the time and energy into networking, skp the job boards, and go directly to the company's Careers Page. This will at least give you a better chance at actually applying for a job that the company posted (just check to make sure the date is recent). Would you hire this guy? I remember my first time job hunting. Like it was yesterday (I can assure you it was not). I had an engineering degree from MIT, but I had spent my first four years out of college working as a “professional musician.” (That was my way of saying I had been a drummer in a rock band, working for far less than minimum wage, earning just enough to scrape by.) And I was terrified that people would find out. What would that do to my chances of getting a job? After all, when you’re approaching every single management consulting company with an office in Boston, the last thing you’d tell them is that you spent the formative years of your career as a musician. But guess what? Every person I spoke to at these management consulting companies LOVED the fact that I had worked as a musician right out of college. They admired the fact that I followed my heart. Followed my passion. Focused on what I loved. And they appreciated the fact that I was creative. So, what did I do? I changed the way I told my story. I started making my life as a musician a central part of my story. Because, after all, it was a big part of who I was. At age 26, it was how I had spent most of my adulthood. In the end, I was offered a job at one of the biggest and most respected consulting companies in the world, and I believe my story played a big role in that. This experience taught me the power of story. And it’s a big reason that story plays such a big role in my Job Hunt Bootcamp program. I teach all my clients how to tell their story in a powerful, authentic way so they can conduct all the conversations in their job hunt with confidence and authority. Surviving the Job Hunt: Skills No One Asked For 😂 Job hunting is a universal rite of passage—exhilarating, exhausting, and educational. Over the past few months of navigating online applications, networking, and endless LinkedIn scrolling, I’ve picked up some unexpected (and very transferable) skills: 1. Decoding Job Descriptions 🕵️♂️   Turning buzzwords like “fast-paced” (coffee addiction) and “wearing many hats” (five jobs in one) into real talk.  2. Application Stalking 🔍   It’s not just sending a resume—it’s deep dives into company culture, the hiring manager’s career path, and, sometimes, the CEO’s dog’s favorite toy.  3. Cover Letter Mastery 📝   Writing “I’m passionate” in 50 unique ways deserves a literary medal. 4. Resume Olympics 🎯   ATS-proofing a resume? I’m basically a Jedi with bullet points.  5. Virtual Interview Pro 💻   Perfect webcam angles and barking dogs—it’s a skill combo I never knew I’d need.  6. Developing a Thick Skin 🤷♂️   Rejections and ghosting? Each “no” adds another badge to my collection (and maybe an extra slice of cake).  7. Networking Like a (Shy) Pro 🤝   Turns out, sending thoughtful LinkedIn messages and joining webinars works better than awkward small talk.  8. Motivation Over Netflix 📺   Binge-watching is a reward after three job apps. Self-control: leveled up. 9. Celebrating Small Wins 🎉   Every interview or response counts as a mini victory. 10. Patience is a Superpower 🕰️   Waiting is half the game, and I’m still playing—coffee in hand. Job hunting isn’t just about finding work; it’s a crash course in resilience, adaptability, and hope.
