The formal buying process can be tricky, especially when the rules seem stacked against you. In these situations, playing by the book might not be the best strategy. If you find the process rigged to favour another vendor, it's time to either disrupt it or walk away. The key is to assess whether you can influence the process to level the playing field. Can you build stronger relationships, offer unique value, or challenge the criteria? If not, sometimes the smartest move is to step back and refocus your efforts where the odds aren’t so skewed. Don’t waste resources on a losing game - know when to break the rules or when to leave the table. #SalesStrategy #Negotiation #BusinessSuccess #KnowWhenToWalkAway #DisruptTheProcess

AE: “It sounds like you're not sure if we are your vendor of choice just yet. Not a problem. I unfortunately can't get a lower price point approved is this scenario. Can I ask what is missing for you so we can manage expectations?” Any way you slice it, if your prospect does not yet know if you are the vendor of choice, there is no reason to negotiate. Being a vendor of choice, knowing the timeline, the start date, as well as the decision making process are four ingredients to have in order to begin negotiation. So ask what is missing for them. Stay curious.

Most of your buyers are navigating their internal evaluation cycle for the first time. This means they are figuring out the process in lock step with you. This also means they are likely taking a reputational risk by championing your widget. Conventional negotiation tactics will have you believe this is some battle of wits and tactics. Them v. you. Hard nosed back and forth with a clear loser and winner. What a counter-productive way to get something done. In modern business, it takes consultative, value-first practices. It means empowering your buyers. Getting on the same side of the table as them. Positioning the "Problem" as the opponent and not you, the vendor.

Some thoughts about Negotiation... 🤝 When it comes to negotiation, it’s easy to think of it as a zero-sum game – where each side fights for a piece of the pie. But what if collaboration could actually make the pie bigger? Take, for example, a negotiation between a supplier and a customer: instead of focusing solely on price, both parties could explore ways to make the entire process more efficient. If the customer commits to larger, long-term orders, the supplier can lower the per-unit price thanks to reduced overhead costs. This way, both sides benefit – the customer enjoys a better price, and the supplier gains business stability. Building relationships in negotiations isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s essential to finding solutions that truly benefit both sides. Approaching the process with openness and transparency helps establish trust and create space for creative solutions that add value for everyone. Successful negotiation isn’t about what we take off the table, but what we can bring to the table together. #SharingThoughts #Negotiation #GrowingThePie #Collaboration #Trust #Procurement #Business
