Today is International Internet Day. Connecting the unconnected and bridging the digital divide - these are phrases we’ve all heard, and for good reason. Digital technologies are linked to about 70% of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, approximately 2.6 billion people - nearly a third of the global population - remain offline, according to the ITU’s Facts and Figures 2023 report. While telcos and terrestrial networks play a critical role, they can't close this gap alone and collaboration is key. Satellite operators and Intellian are essential to achieving universal connectivity. We have strategic partnerships with more satellite operators than any other manufacturer in the world, and our gateways and antennas are the crucial link between satellite networks in space and empowering global connectivity for millions of people on earth across oceans and continents, organizations and communities. We're proud of the work we do and are excited about the future of connectivity. #Intellian #SatelliteConnectivity #GlobalInternet #ConnectedEverywhere #SDG

A Game-Changer for Connectivity: The SpaceX-T-Mobile Revolution The partnership between SpaceX and T-Mobile signals a paradigm shift in internet and voice services. With the launch of satellites aimed at eliminating dead zones, this innovation poses a serious challenge to traditional wired internet and tower-based voice services. Telecom companies must act fast to embrace satellite technology, or risk being left behind in this rapidly advancing revolution. The future of connectivity is here—and it’s moving faster than many anticipated. The Changing Face of Telecom in Developing Markets Customer behavior drives investments in the telecom industry, and we are on the brink of a seismic shift. With increasing smartphone adoption and the rise of internet-based voice services, traditional telecom models are under pressure. The preference for "voice over internet" solutions like VoIP, coupled with innovations in satellite connectivity (such as the SpaceX and T-Mobile partnership), is accelerating change at an unprecedented rate. In developing countries, where infrastructure challenges exist, satellite-based services can leapfrog traditional towers. This could lead to drastic industry changes in the next 2-3 years, forcing telecom companies to rethink their strategies. Adaptation and innovation will determine who thrives in this evolving landscape. #TelecomRevolution #Innovation #DevelopingMarkets #SatelliteInternet #SmartphoneAdoption #DigitalTransformation #SpaceTech #Innovation #SatelliteInternet #TelecomRevolution #TMobile #SpaceX #Connectivity #DigitalFuture

Credit to TOI World Desk / TIMESOFINDIA.COM Apr 13, 2024 'No need for cell towers': China has revolutionised smartphone communications - Times of India https://lnkd.in/gpUx6iGZ In a landmark achievement for satellite communications, Chinese scientists have developed the world's first satellite capable of enabling smartphone calls directly, without the need for ground-based infrastructure. Named "Tiantong, which translates to 'connecting with heaven, the initiative draws inspiration from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, aiming to bridge communication gaps rather than create them. The Tiantong-1 satellite series, which began with its first launch on August 6, 2016, now includes three satellites in a geosynchronous orbit at 36,000km, covering the entire Asia-Pacific region. This breakthrough came to fruition when Huawei Technologies released the worlď's first smartphone supporting satellite calls in September of the previous year, leading the way for other manufacturers like Xiaomi, Honor, and Oppo to follow suit, a South China Morning Post report said. These technological advancements have proven invaluable, particularly in emergency situations where traditional communication networks are compromised. For instance, during the 6.2- magnitude earthquake in Gansu province on December 18, affected individuals could maintain contact with the outside world thanks to the satellite call function available on their smartphones. "Direct satellite connectivity for mobile phones has become a new development trend, and satellite communication will gradually become popular among the general public," noted a team led by Cui Wanzhao from the China Academy of Space Technology. Their work, detailed in the Aerospace Science and Technology journal, highlights the overcoming of significant technical challenges related to passive intermodulation (PIM), which can degrade the quality of satellite calls By addressing the PIM issue, the team has enabled exceptionally sensitive reception capabilities in the Tiantong satellites, allowing them to pick up signals from standard smartphones without the need for external antennas This capability is critical, especially given the satellites' exposure to extreme temperature variations and their operation across multiple frequency bands. China's advancements in this field are securing its position as a leader in satellite communication technology globally, heralding a new era where geographic isolation no longer equates to communication isolation.

Personally, I've often thought the private space industry needs to organize itself into a global industry association to effectively bridge and scale the digital divide. Is the new non-profit Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA) on its way to becoming something analogous to the #GSMA? It's too early to tell and would obviously take years, but I do think #Coopertition among the new players and incumbents is more relevant than ever as first movers continue to gain market share. Or on the flip side, is it more realistic for a new "for-profit" entity to emerge and become basically the global #MVNO aggregator for space-based connectivity? (i.e. frequency, constellation, architecture, protocol & orbit agnostic). In a former role, I spent years as a founding Steering Committee member of the IoT World Alliance trying to coordinate multiple MNO's to productize and commercialize a global connectivity service that was pre-standard, so I'm keenly aware of the numerous hurdles and challenges involved. Nevertheless, I do think the industry is evolving and converging quite rapidly - and I'm super excited to be in the middle of it all!
