Only one week left to apply for the Grasslands Diversity in Marketing Internship! Curious how the DIM internship can set you up for success in your marcomms career? Here's what 2023 DIM Intern Jordyn Whitaker (pictured left) had to say: "Grasslands’ Diversity-in-Marketing internship has changed not only my professional life but also my personal life. The opportunity to learn from a team of passionate, genuine, strategic, and creative individuals has granted me a wealth of knowledge that I wouldn’t be able to have anywhere else. I entered this internship with little to no PR, marketing, or agency experience and I’m leaving with real hands-on experiences with social media marketing, pitch development and distribution, project management, sales and analytics, and much more." Starting a career in Public Relations can be an exciting, rewarding yet sometimes a daunting and overwhelming journey. We sat down and asked TMC directors Sally Brown and Chrissy Biasotto for their advice on how to get noticed and get your foot in the door in PR. INTERNING, INTERNING, INTERNING Both Sally and Chrissy landed their first roles by rolling up their sleeves and gaining practical work experience with unpaid internships until an agency hired them. There is no better way to learn than being on the ground and experiencing the work firsthand. “Intern at a few different agencies to get a cross section of experience to add to your CV and for you to get an understanding of what you like and don’t like. We will always look when hiring entry level roles if a candidate has had a cross section of work experience.” Key Pointers for Candidates / Interns wanting to get a head start and a career in PR: - Being present in your internship and introducing yourselves to the decision makers / directors of the business. We always remember someone who has made themselves known to us! - Be proactive, follow up with your directors or direct line of report mentioning how much you enjoyed your time interning and how interested you are in the role. Ask advice on what you need to do in order to be considered for a role. - Be gracious and eager to learn. Put your hand up for any task, don’t be precious and get stuck into hard work. Volunteer to assist at events to gain a full 360 aspect of the role. - Don’t be scared to ask questions when you are interning, you are there to learn as much as you can. - If you love an internship and really can imagine yourself working their ask if you can extend your internship and be transparent that the reason for extending is in hope for a role at the agency you are interning. - Don’t be shy to submit examples of your work to Directors to show your skill set, it might be a press release or an example of a pitch on behalf of one of the agencies brands. - Make sure you are following the agency on social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn) to prove your interest in the agency. - Have a full understanding of the business and their clients.

Internships for sport management students 💻 🏀 Picking apart my recent post - my first piece of advice for future sport managers was to participate in internships, volunteer, etc But - how does one even go about finding an internship?! A) Reach out, reach out, and reach out some more. Research on apps liked LinkedIn the type of role you’re looking for, seek the people involved, and kindly reach out offering any help. Make sure to establish a relationship, who you are, and again offer help. B ) Leads to my next point ; If you strictly are looking for a job and requesting a job and / or internship - most high level managers don’t have the ability to give energy or their time towards your job search - but they do have time to take items off their plate and help a young sport manager in that sense. Never message someone where only you get something out of it. Ensure you provide value, and don’t come across as if you are only messaging to get a job and / or internship. C ) Volunteer for one day events that pop up. If you are a sports management student - more often than not your professors will be sending you weekly volunteer opportunities. If you work hard and shake the right hands at these events - good things will happen and people will keep you in mind for future opportunities! D ) Follow ups: When you meet someone that can help your career and maybe offer you internship opportunities down the line ; stay in touch! Follow up by checking in, being respectful, and talking about items outside of asking for things. If I have a text thread with someone, and the only messages in the thread involve them asking me for things, I’m not inclined to help them. All that said - if you are a sports management student and feeling lost, I am happy to help. Send me a message!
