I never understand people who argue about PMF vs distribution and pick a side. While both are important, preference of one over the other majorly depends on the market for early-stage startups. For example, if a startup is in a crowded market, say beauty for example, then its positioning and market reach are more essential, even before the brand/products are launched. People today have hundreds of known options and would most likely not buy from an unknown beauty brand making distribution less relevant. Apart from market size, market sentiment is also key. For instance, beauty brands in the 70s focused a lot more on product innovation and quality, surviving the test of time till this date. In this case, the market responded better to distribution because it was backed by reliable R&D. Thus, PMF vs distribution is an entirely subjective argument so do what makes the most sense for your market and users.

Positioning, at its core, addresses two critical questions: 1. Why purchase at all? This question is central for startups pioneering new categories or solutions. The focus here is on educating the market about the benefits of the product and the problem it solves, which creates the demand. 2. Why choose our product? For startups in competitive markets (aka most startups), differentiation is key. The strategy MUST highlight what sets the product apart from others—whether its unique features, superior user experience, or better integration capabilities. For startups straddling the early stages of market creation and those entering a competitive arena, tackling both positioning questions may be necessary. This often leads to a two-phase sales cycle where the first phase focuses on establishing the need for such a product, and the second phase involves competing against other market players. The challenge is to figure out how streamline this process to ensure that potential users are not only educated about the product but are also quickly convinced of its superiority, ideally consolidating the decision-making process into a single phase.

I've seen startups with an A+++ product fail! Why? They didn't "De-Risk" in the first 24 months. What's "De-Risking"? 💡 Investors don't hand the startup team sufficient funds to build the company from zero through to product launch, commercialization and ultimate success. It’s much more common to build the company’s value in step-wise fashion and "De-Risk" the investors. What to avoid & what to do instead: ❌ Funding once is enough - after that: Start selling! ✅ Build steadily... and in steps of funding (~3+ rounds)! ❌ Spend all time to make your product THE BEST! ✅ Create milestones: Tech Dev., IP Securement, 510(k)! ❌ You got it to commercialization. Let's rest! ✅ It's the time where you need even MORE funding! Product launches are EXPENSIVE! Many aren't ready for that cash requirement. But it's painful to see... → Early successes vanishing before launch! ← So,... Don't be that person! 😊 - Have foresight & plan ahead. - Build multiple streams of funding. - Understand your product's production cost. What'd you add? What did I miss? P.S. Below is Bodhi 🐕 + what De-Risking Steps you can take!

Starting a product-based startup is no easy feat. In addition to having a great product, you need to build a strong brand, create a smooth customer experience, and generate enough buzz to get people talking. And that’s just the beginning. Once you’ve got all of that sorted, you still need to actually get your product into the hands of customers. For many startups, that means launching your product in retail. Product retail launches can be a great way to get exposure for your brand and generate excitement around your product. But they can also be a lot of work. In our latest blog post (see link below), we’ll take a look at why product retail launches are so important for startups, the benefits of paying attention to them, and how to make the most of a retail launch. https://lnkd.in/g4rbaF5M #retail #newproductlaunch #productstartup #retaillaunch
