Six strategies for implementing organisational change ---------------------------------------------------- It is said that guiding change can be regarded as a leader's ultimate test. In modern organisations change represents potential value and risk for leaders and in many cases it cannot be avoided. Therefore one needs to be aware of stragegies that are effective when change is needed. Here are six strategies proposed by Kotter And Schlesinger: 1. Education and communication It is crucial to communicate the reasons for change to the individuals affected by it so that they understand it. 2. Participation and involvement One can convert resisters to change into supporters by involving them in the change process. 3. Facilitation and support It is only natural for people to resist change and therefore one way to mitigate this resistance is to provide additional training, mentoring and opening channels for communication to address concerns. 4. Manipulation and co-optation Manipulation involves using information in a selective way and in some cases it can be the only way to overcome resistance. However, this is a double edged sword, if the leader is seen as manipulative he will lose the trust of his followers. 5. Negotiation and barganing This involves providing individuals resisting change with incentives to either change or leave the organisation. 6. Explicit and implicit coercion When speed is essential and changed likely to be unpopular regardless of the tactics used, it may be necessary to coerce. Reference: Kotter, J.
