Now that the Government has published the Employment Rights Bill, HR professionals and business owners are bracing themselves for the biggest upheaval in employment law for many decades. The Employment Rights Bill contains: - the removal of the two-year service requirement to bring an unfair dismissal claim - paternity leave to become a day-one employment right - a new statutory right to bereavement leave - enhanced protection against dismissal for pregnant employees and maternity leave returners - a requirement for large employers to develop and publish action plans to address their gender pay gap and support employees going through the menopause - a requirement for employers to accommodate flexible working requests as far as reasonably feasible - safeguards for workers who work variable hours, including zero hours workers - greater protection for employees against "fire and rehire” - statutory sick pay from day 1 of sickness No dates have yet be set for these changes but we will keep you updated as further developments occur - watch this space! We believe that HR is a critical part of each business not least in relation to finding, retaining and engaging great staff members whilst keeping an employer compliant with its legal obligations. In May we wrote for HR Zone about this (https://bit.ly/3W45Q5k). In the UK, the change in government is likely to mean there will be additional challenges (and opportunities!) for employers and their HR advisers.

This morning I hosted a webinar, Navigating Change: The Political Impact on HR & Recruitment, and thought i'd share some bullet points of how the new government might impact HR & Recruitment in the UK 🔍 King Charles's recent speech, in line with the Labour government's agenda, signals major shifts in UK employment practices. -Zero-Hour Contracts: Expect tighter regulations or a possible ban, pushing for more stable employment terms. -Fire and Rehire: A crackdown on unethical practices means HR must review and revise employment policies to ensure fairness. -Day One Rights: New employees will gain rights such as sick pay and parental leave from day one, requiring updates to onboarding processes. -Flexible Working: Flexible work options will become standard, crucial for attracting and retaining talent. -Support for New Mothers: Enhanced maternity protections will necessitate better support structures within organisations. -Single Enforcement Body: A centralised body will enforce workers' rights, requiring full compliance across HR practices. -Social Care Sector: Improved pay and conditions will drive recruitment and retention in social care. -Schools: Investment in workforce development and retention will impact HR in education. -Empowering Trade Unions: Stronger union roles will shape workplace negotiations, requiring cooperative HR strategies. King Charles’s speech sets the stage for significant changes. HR teams must adapt swiftly to ensure compliance and lead in creating fairer workplaces.
