Some fascinating data in this Technology Association of Grantmakers report, including: 🤖 81% of foundations report using some AI, but 🤖 Most are just using rudimentary functions like note-taking, and 🤖 70% don't have an AI policy.

Octavia Butler's novel, "Parable of the Sower" is more than fiction—it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Butler's vision compels us to confront tech-driven disparities and shape a future where AI innovation serves equity, not just profit. This year we have seen rapid adoption of AI, looking ahead to the next few years the philanthropic sector is called upon to spearhead proactive change by funding tech initiatives that promote inclusive human-centered AI technology practices. Philanthropy will play a pivotal role in facilitating cooperation among policymakers, nonprofits, communities, and tech experts, working towards democratizing technology and establishing frameworks that prioritize social equity. #AI #equity #innovation #tech

"So what happens when an assessment algorithm is used to assess an AI-generated application? Are we all (fund seekers and fund givers alike) freeing up time for better, richer conversations and other more important work? Or are we losing the importance of people expressing themselves and people listening in this process?" -- Important and timely questions and observations from philanthropy advisor Emma Beeston about using #AI in #fundraising and #grantmaking!

Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. My colleague, Nathan Chappell, said this during his presentation and it's one of my favorite guiding principles related to #technology. The opportunity cost of not examining the many biases built into our existing data systems can range from lost donations to hurt feelings - both of which we should find unacceptable. But in our enthusiasm to adopt new tech, we can run headlong into unintended consequences. Maia McGill's juxtaposition of one-dimensional #data we've historically collected against the richness and depth of our three-dimensional constituents conjures vivid imagery. It's just as problematic to perpetuate #stereotypes and #biases as it is to forget that each of our stakeholders comes with their own unique life experiences. That knowledge helps those who engage with our institutions to feel seen, respected, and valued, all of which are required for #trust in #relationships. The notion of asset mapping is a critical step in viewing our #alumni and #donors through a positive and personalized lens; how can we add value to their lives and how can we craft stories and experiences that reinforce their love of our #organizations? #Equity isn't just about identifying and eliminating bias, it's also about building fairer, stronger, and more #inclusive approaches in its place. I appreciate Nathan's urging to compat #bias by understanding donor motivations. Our benefactors may share superficial characteristics in common, but their individual #passions and #goals around philanthropy are distinct and tied to their own lived experience. If we can understand those motivations and authentically connect them to our activities and initiatives that advance our donors' goals, we can simultaneously meet organizational needs, demonstrate #impact, and bring joy into the lives of those #generous contributors. At the end of the day, we will always engage in the struggle Nathan described as humanity vs. utility. We will become better, faster, and savvier in our use of technology to facilitate fundraising at scale, but the moment we forget there are human beings behind those data, we lose the vital connections we need to build respectful rapport with individuals who make decisions about how their #donations will benefit causes important to them. Artificial intelligence is still in its "Wild West" phase, so and it's easy to lose ourselves in what's possible. In applying AI's potential to philanthropy, we need to be thoughtful and imagine how our decisions will impact our donors' perceptions of and engagement with our organizations. Failing to do so has costs that will hurt everyone across our sector. A hammer isn't the only tool we have, and every problem isn't a nail. Watch this #webinar recording and learn along with us.
