I really enjoyed listening to this episode of Unstoppable Mindset. Peter discusses some of his early childhood challenges before an official diagnosis around the age of 16 helps him makes sense of some of those early struggles. His career so far has taken him to the other side of the world and to the lofty heights of CEO proving that with the right supports, passion and determination - anything is possible. Peter makes some further points that really resonated with me including: - When he started on the frontline, he had a couple of weeks of training and "started quite clueless". I think many of us in the sector can relate to this and it really underlines the importance of ensuring all frontline staff at least have solid foundational training/skills to provide the necessary assistance to people with highly complex needs. - Peter talks about the need to raise the standards of service here in Australia as well as getting better at sharing best practice from around the globe. I couldn't agree more! Having recently joined the Institute of Employability Professionals (IEP), I have had greater exposure to Employment Service practices from other parts of the world and it feels like we are all dealing with the same types of challenges. Surely, evidence based best practice can be transferred and applied across borders and over oceans. - Finally, Peter states - "Nothing is more powerful than humans helping humans". As contracts and services change over time and the influence and emergence of new technology is forever present, let's not forget nor neglect the critical importance of the human connection. If you haven't had a chance to listen to this podcast yet... do yourself a favour!!
Really enjoyed making this podcast with the inimitable Michael Hingson: https://lnkd.in/gTrsmmBs We took a deep dive into all things disability employment - looking particularly at the attitudinal barriers from employers and society at large, and how they can be dismantled. For those who do not know Michael, he is an amazing gentleman - most famous, perhaps, for escaping a high floor in the Twin Towers on 9/11 with his guide dog. Michael makes amazing points about how his disability was more than compensated for by his abilities in that instance - a preparedness that enabled him to stay cool and even help others. There is also a lot of tea-based banter. Do take a listen, and if you enjoy it please share! P.s. that’s not me calling myself an expert there, but the show! I would never be so bold ☺️
