I joined Walmart Connect in September 2019, one of maybe 100 people at a two-month-old tech startup, working out of a WeWork in San Mateo with shuttle service and kombucha on tap—your basic Silicon Valley experience, except that we were a division of Walmart. We were tasked with building and launching a digital advertising business on Walmart.com, to compete with a certain online retailer that had been doing the same thing, to great success, for years. NGL: I knew nothing about digital advertising. But as the only B2B writer at the company, I had to learn fast. We all did. Then the pandemic happened, and suddenly everyone was shopping online—especially for groceries. With 4,700+ physical stores essentially covering the entire U.S., most of them already offering online grocery shopping with store pickup or home delivery, Walmart had an enormous advantage over all other online retailers. Each of our stores was like a mini local fulfillment center for fresh food—not to mention craft items, outdoor gear, kids’ games, and all of the other things people started buying as the pandemic wore on. This sudden influx of new online customers was very exciting to Walmart suppliers, who immediately all wanted to advertise with us. Our tiny ad business leapt into hyper-growth mode overnight. Our ad revenue shot up exponentially. We all worked like superheroes. The ride hasn’t slowed down since. For my entire career, I’ve fantasized about working at a unicorn startup. I never imagined Walmart Connect would be that unicorn. I also never imagined tossing around terms like “macrocontextual targeting,” “media mix modeling” and “closed-loop omnichannel measurement” like a boss, but here we are. Congratulations, Walmart Connect colleagues. We built this together! I raise a glass of kombucha to us all.
Walmart Connect celebrates 5 years today and having been a part of two of those years, I'm proud to say we are accomplishing incredible achievements each and every day for our suppliers and for our customers. Building a successful retail media network which is powered by data and closed-loop measurement for a retailer which reaches 90% of America is not an easy feat.
