First-Ever Forum Examines Contemporary Leadership Challenges Today’s business leaders face a complex balancing act involving concerns about profitability and social and environmental sustainability. The recent Business, Government, and Society Forum discussed ways forward. Hosted by Stanford GSB’s Business, Government, and Society (BGS) Initiative, the forum brought together leaders from business, nonprofit organizations, government, and academia to share their experiences and perspectives on the evolving challenges of leadership in a rapidly changing world. “Today, leadership is not only about delivering a great product and getting to profitability. It’s also taking into account diverse stakeholders and making sure the organization you’re leading is mindful of the implications of its decisions on other groups,” said BGS Initiative director Maria Frantz, MBA ’94. Among the keynote speakers was PG&E CEO Patricia Poppe, MS ’05, who discussed the challenges of providing affordable energy while promoting safety, climate resilience, and sustainability. “How do we best serve all people?” Poppe asked. “We have multiple stakeholders, so there are a lot of voices. It’s hard to have all these voices, but they make us better and we listen to one another and learn from one another, and then we have that experience to put to bear.”

At the moment, the road to a sustainable future seems to be rather bumpy. That was one aspect I discussed with Steve Kenzie from UN Global Compact Network UK and Eliot Whittington from Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) at the conference “Responsible Business Europe”. Or to use a different metaphor: The headwinds are increasing – the tough EV market is one example, the current discussions about trade barriers is another. What we need now is the right attitude, a clear governance and responsible leadership: Yes, there might be more challenges than expected. But we stay focused on the bigger goal: integrating #sustainability throughout our entire business. Thanks for the insightful debate, Steve and Eliot!
