During #TrusteesWeek a lot of my contacts have been celebrating the amazing work being done by trustees across the sector, but also lamenting the number of charities that have consistent trustee vacancies. 4 out 5 organisations! An Inclusive Boards report from 2022 found that: * 29% of charities have all white boards compared * 51% of charities do not have a woman of the global majority on their board * Only of 16% of trustees are from the global majority. * Women represent 40% of trustees while making up 90% of the workforce * And the average age for a trustee in the UK is 60 years-old So do we have a vacant chair problem or do we have an inclusion problem?? This had me thinking about ways we could do more to open up the role of trustee to feel more accessible to people who might feel like they don’t fit the bill. Some fascinating insights here, including: "Most of Europe’s 180,000 foundations have emerged in the last 20 years, and they donate an estimated €60 billion annually to the 2.8 million charitable organisations across the European Union countries. Germany and France are the largest European philanthropic markets in size, wealth, and growth. On average, the nonprofit sector typically contributes around 5% of a European country’s GDP. In France, the charitable sector employs 10% of the French workforce and generates 10% of the country’s GDP"

𝗣𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 💸 As we advance through 2024, Michelle Wright examines the intricate fundraising challenges faced by arts organizations. With the increasing competition for funds from trusts and foundations, a fragile financial landscape at the local level, and shifts in individual and corporate giving, the strategy for securing resources is fraught with complexity. Neil Heslop, CEO of Charity Aid Foundation, remarks in the 2023 UK Giving Report that despite a record £12.7bn in donations last year, these were largely from the same number of donors. Amid economic instability and high inflation, organizations must rethink their approaches to fundraising. Legacy giving and long-term relationships remain vital, yet challenges such as economic turbulence, especially impacting Gen Z and the ethical dilemmas posed by AI in fundraising, complicate the outlook. As elections loom and donor behaviors shift, what strategies can organizations adopt to navigate these uncertain times?
