Have you heard of the "Batman Effect"? And how can it help you run your company? And what does it have to do with your CFO/controller? When you face a tough task, imagine that someone else is doing it. Imagine your "other self," your alter ego. Research shows that having an alter ego helps you view tasks more clearly, with less emotional attachment. You see the problem from another perspective, not your own. You think more logically, make decisions more easily, and complete the task more efficiently. How can this help in your day-to-day and strategic management? My superior Bojan Radojicic likes to do following type of trick. Imagine that you're not your own boss. Picture yourself as a CEO, accountable to the owner for the business's performance. How would the owner assess your work? What kind of results would he/she expect from you? Use those expectations to set your goals. Now, imagine that your alter ego takes over the company instead of you. What would he/she change in how the business is run? How would he/she view your position in the market, among customers and suppliers? How would he/she view your profitability? What would happen to your product/service range? Once you answer these questions, you’ll know what to do. What if you can’t answer these questions? Then you have a bigger problem. In that case, you don’t have control over your business. You need more information. Start thinking about the people and other resources that can help you get the right data. For instance, many companies don’t have their own CFO or controller. You might consider hiring an internal CFO or controller, or engaging a consulting firm like WTS Tax & Finance for external CFO/controller services. This way, the financials you get from your accountant can be "translated" into actionable insights for business decisions.
