Two years ago, our Community Hearing Advisor, Annette, joined our team to help bring hearing care directly to communities and raise awareness about the importance of hearing health. In recognition of her dedication and the way she supports clients in getting the hearing help they need, Annette received our Excellence Award for Community Promoter of the Year. Annette says excellence to her means, “Being professional and knowledgeable about hearing health, being client-focused by listening to their needs and ensuring they get the help they require, and being a team player.” And why does it matter more at Hearing Australia for Annette? She explains, “It’s about making a difference in people's lives through the early identification of hearing loss and providing them with the right ongoing care to ensure they're able to live their life to the full.” Congratulations Annette! Pictured: Annette on the right, who is also a St John Ambulance volunteer, recently visited the Umoona community in Coober Pedy to provide medical kits. Annette is becoming a well-known, friendly face in the community as she also recently drove our hearing bus from Adelaide to Coober Pedy to provide hearing checks.

Hearing is an essential part of our lives, yet, hearing loss often goes ignored, creating challenges that can impact social interaction, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. This year’s theme is around ‘changing mindsets’ and calls for a collective shift in how we address hearing loss. It’s not just about age; anyone can be affected, and that’s why we offer FREE hearing screenings for anyone aged over 18 years, as a way for New Zealanders to stay on top of their hearing health.

It's great to see such an important focus on research and support in this area. It's crucial to involve people with lived experience at every stage, from planning and conducting research to disseminating findings and implementing meaningful changes based on the collected data. Rather than being mere case studies, they should be integral to the entire process from the outset. Grassroots and peer-led organisations are excellent starting points for this kind of involvement. At PODC, we are more than happy to support this project, and we believe many of our stakeholders would also be enthusiastic about contributing their support. Additionally, it would be beneficial to see more research on language acquisition and the impacts of language deprivation, particularly among Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Understanding these aspects can help in creating effective interventions and support systems to ensure every child has access to the language and communication tools they need. Macquarie University Hearing I am happy to discuss this issue further and explore how we can collaborate to drive this important research forward. Let's ensure our efforts lead to meaningful and lasting change for the community.
People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are more likely to experience hearing loss and less likely to access hearing services. Because Australia is a diverse country with 30% of people born overseas, hearing health inequality is a serious challenge. We want all people to have sufficient usable hearing to achieve their goals in life. Untreated hearing loss impacts communication, quality of life, educational and employment opportunities, social engagement, and physical and mental health. October: A Month for Hearing Health October is Hearing Loss Prevention Month, a crucial reminder to safeguard our hearing. Hearing loss, a condition that affects millions worldwide, can significantly impact quality of life. Whether caused by noise exposure, age, or underlying health conditions, hearing loss can lead to social isolation, communication difficulties, and even cognitive decline. This month, organizations and individuals unite to raise awareness about hearing health, promote early detection, and encourage preventive measures. Educational campaigns highlight the risks associated with excessive noise exposure, the benefits of regular hearing checks, and the availability of assistive listening devices. By understanding the factors contributing to hearing loss and taking proactive steps to protect our ears, we can significantly reduce the prevalence of this condition and ensure better hearing health for generations to come.

Talking to people at work about your hearing loss can be challenging. What will their reactions be? Will they think differently of me? Will this effect whether I'm promoted? The more we talk about hearing loss and deafness, the more normal it becomes. https://lnkd.in/eN6AhDky

It is World Hearing Day 2024 today. Did you know that: 🤯 1,6 billion people worldwide are affected by #hearingloss 🦻🏻 Only 20% of those in need are fitted with #hearingaids ⁉ Ear and hearing care is still facing a lot of societal misperceptions and stigma These figures break my heart but somehow do not surprise me… Progressive hearing loss has been close to home since I was a child. My granddad suffered from hearing impairment and despite his struggles, he fiercely rejected to get a hearing aid fitted. I vividly remember: → the TV and radio being progressively turned up; → the increasing frequency of “sweetheart, can you please repeat?” → the fewer and fewer phone calls with friends he was making; → the pain and deep sadness in his eyes - he knew this is not going away. On several occasions, I cautiously asked him to get a hearing aid. “I will come with you, granny, you won’t be alone”, I courageously said to him. I didn’t manage to convince him. He was a proud man (and a stubborn one !) and the few stories of unsuccessful fittings his close friends had experienced meant more than any argument we could present to him. We knew no better. I guess, we just accepted that back then the hearing aids were less aesthetically attractive and mechanically effective and my granddad’s feeling of shame, blame and frustration was too strong to settle. 📢 Do you know how to approach a conversation about hearing loss? 👉🏻 WSAudiology shares 3 tips to help you along the way. 👂🏻 Take a hearing test - https://lnkd.in/dSUqAF8z? Raising awareness and demystifying the common misperceptions related to ear and hearing problems is so needed. Not only today! Every day! #worldhearingday #hearingcare

👂Let's talk about the importance of prioritizing your hearing health – because your ears deserve just as much attention as your eyes! 👁️ Here's the truth: while vision often takes the spotlight when it comes to healthcare, hearing is just as vital. Yet, many people tend to overlook or delay addressing hearing issues compared to vision concerns. 👓 ⌛In fact, did you know that, on average, people wait a staggering 10 years after noticing hearing loss to seek help and get hearing aids? That's a long time to go without proper intervention! The thing is, hearing loss often creeps up gradually, making it easy to brush off the early signs and symptoms. 🦻 It's not uncommon for individuals to dismiss hearing difficulties as a "normal" part of aging, but here's the reality check – no amount of hearing loss should be considered normal! 🚫 So, let's change the narrative and start treating hearing health with the same level of importance as vision health. If you're experiencing any changes in your hearing, don't wait – reach out to us today for a comprehensive evaluation. Your ears deserve the best care possible! 📞👂 #HearingHealth #VisionHealth #PrioritizeYourSenses

This World Hearing Day 2024 let's tackle the global issue of unmet ear and hearing care needs. Did you know that over 80% of these needs remain unaddressed? On average, people wait ten years before seeking treatment for hearing loss, and over 3 million people are thought to be living with untreated hearing loss in the UK, at a cost of £8,500 per person. These staggering figures reflect both economic loss and social impact. Deeply ingrained societal misperceptions and stigmatising mindsets surrounding hearing loss act as formidable barriers in the path toward addressing this critical issue. These misconceptions not only hinder individuals from seeking timely care and support but also contribute to a broader societal reluctance to prioritise ear and hearing health. This year, it's imperative that we shift our focus towards raising awareness and disseminating accurate information to combat these entrenched beliefs. By proactively engaging communities, healthcare providers, and policymakers in open dialogue, we can begin to dismantle the stereotypes and prejudices surrounding hearing loss. Through education and advocacy efforts, we aim to empower individuals to recognise the importance of early intervention and access to quality care. By fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance, we can pave the way for improved support systems and resources for those affected by hearing loss. Together, let's work towards dispelling these misconceptions and fostering a culture of inclusivity and support for all individuals impacted by ear and hearing challenges. This World Hearing Day let's amplify our efforts to ensure that everyone has equal access to the care and resources they need to thrive. Let's break the silence around hearing loss, challenge misconceptions, and ensure ear and hearing care become a reality for all! #WorldHearingDay #ChangingMindsets #EarCare #HearingCare #HealthForAll
