Looking forward to moderating this all-star panel on #climate and #environmental advocacy, featuring Katie Robinson, Jacqueline Patterson, Susan Hendershot, and Ariana Gonzalez and exploring this important topic together! The #BuildingTogether leadership experience from the Council on Foundations is timely, to say the least. In my own environmental advocacy before joining the foundation world, a regret is not fully appreciating the power of authentic, principled coalitions. Sure, I worked in coalition. But primarily with other organizations that closely shared the same policy goals. Our differences sometimes seemed large, but they were, in context, minute. On so many issues today, generating the influence to overcome powerful opponents requires more than working effectively with those with whom you already share affinity. It also demands figuring out how to expand the circle of affinity. Exploring common goals that exist. Forging, sometimes painfully, the actual relationships that can drive more influential and powerful responses to climate change, water pollution--and much more. This isn't just a "good" thing to do, its a strategic way to win.

One of the missions of the Black Leadership Group is to empower Black talent. During our initial launch of the Black Leadership Job Board, Robin Landman OBE CCMI, discussed that organisations can seem reluctant to seek out Black talent even though there is no shortage of it. Organisations need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the only person in a leadership team, they need to remember that Black individuals don’t want to be the sole representation in a leadership team; they need assurance that their selection is based on merit, not just diversity quotas.

As I begin my own journey in the dissertation, I am keenly aware of how these questions are formed because there is a lack of understanding in the literature. Answering this call advances so much good in the world! Consider participating if you meet this criteria.

In 2018, I set out on a quest to identify 277 out of 21,356 Black headteachers in the UK, fueled by a desire for representation and a connection to Black trailblazers in education https://lnkd.in/ekAkk4Vw (new list pending). Fast forward to a recent half term, where I was introduced to the transformative book, “Letter to a Young Generation.” Authored by the inspiring Amanda Wilson, this literary work breathed new life into my purpose, urging Black future leaders to embrace boldness and courage on their journey towards headship. The importance of representation is further emphasised in the context of a low number of Black teachers advancing to middle and senior leadership roles in the UK. This book features letters from Black headteachers across the UK, sharing advice for the next generation. It's a resource for those contemplating leadership, navigating not only why but also how, in the face of underrepresentation within the profession. #EducationLeadership #RepresentationMatters #Inspiration #LeadingEquality

🗣 Brown vs. Board Ruling = 40 Thousand Voices Silenced. In the aftermath of the Brown vs. Board decision, a deliberate effort was made to displace Black educators from their roles, leaving approximately 40 thousand being affected within the first decade. Not to mention, reclaiming our space as Black educators, especially in leadership, has been no small feat, but we have been fighting this upward battle with pride. 💡 Why? Because when our students see themselves mirrored in their teachers, they feel valued and empowered to thrive. WE are responsible for paving the way for a generation that perceives equity and equality as a natural and integral aspect of their educational experience. 👉🏾 One Solution…Mentorship and professional development programs catered to retaining and advancing Black educators in leadership positions within the education system! The celebration of Black History month presents an opportunity to pay tribute to the profound legacy of people of the African diaspora. It is a reminder that our multifaceted history holds deep value and significance in shaping where we are today and where we are headed in the future. Engaging in impactful conversations, visiting immersive cultural displays or thought-provoking performances that highlight the resilience, ingenuity and vast contributions of the black community throughout time serves as a powerful reminder that we must continue to work towards a more inclusive society.
