Morehead The University of Georgia’s School of Medicine will generate between $1.8 billion and $2.3 billion in cumulative economic impact on the state of Georgia by 2040, according to an analysis conducted by the nationally recognized consulting firm Tripp Umbach. The authors of this article highlight both the unique challenges faced by and the contributions made by academic medical centers (AMCs) that serve as their state’s lone AMC, through the experience of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In addition, they lay out ideas to address some of the most severe threats facing lone AMCs. Furthermore, patients can be involved in care more broadly. Patients can have a role in educating future healthcare professionals. By sharing their experiences, patients can help students learn how to communicate effectively with patients. Furthermore, patients can also be involved in evaluating whether the care delivered by healthcare professionals matches patients' needs. After all, isn’t the one who receives care best equipped to help improve it? In this dissertation, we studied how patients can be prepared for and benefit from involvement in the training of future and current healthcare professionals. Supervisor: Prof. dr.
