While the Ontario Pharmacists Association (OPA) is thrilled about Wednesday's government announcements about pharmacy professionals’ scope expansion, it’s unfortunate to see some misguided remarks suggesting that this compromises patient safety. These claims are not supported by evidence and Ontario patients deserve better. OPA supports all healthcare providers in practicing to their full scope, utilizing their expertise to enhance Ontario’s healthcare capacity and improve patient access. We advocate for government investment in primary care and across all sectors of the health system.
The government of Ontario’s expansion of pharmacy professionals’ scope is a significant step towards improving the efficiency and safety of team-based healthcare. By empowering each member of a patient’s care team to work to the fullest extent of their training and knowledge, we are fostering a more collaborative and effective healthcare environment. As witnessed in Alberta, pharmacists have been successfully treating minor ailments and autonomously prescribing for several years. Ontario’s pharmacy professionals are trained, knowledgeable, and trusted by patients in their communities. Pharmacy teams are now better equipped than ever to support their interdisciplinary colleagues and, ultimately, the patients of Ontario.
Congratulations Chris and Brain. Trust it went well.
